CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - McKendree University men's volleyball snagged two wins on the road at the Harvard University this past weekend, defeating St. Francis University 3-1 on Friday and host Harvard 3-2 on Saturday. With the wins, the Bearcats improve to 3-2 on the season as they prepare for two home games this week.
Against St. Francis, McKendree fell in the first set 25-18, but would take the victory in the last three sets 25-16, 25-21, and 26-24 to seal their second win of the season. Leading the Bearcats was freshman opposite hitter Bryce Wetjen with a career-high 20 kills.
Sophomore outside hitter Kevin Schuele added nine kills,10 digs, and two aces while redshirt junior Kyle Wilson tallied seven kills and 10 digs in the Bearcats' win. Junior setter Tyler Poulsen posted 10 digs of his own in addition to 37 assists on the day.
The Red Flash dropped to 0-5 on the season with the loss as they were led by sophomore opposite side hitter Nathan Zini with 17 kills.
The Bearcats went into five sets against Harvard as the Crimson took the first set 25-20 while McKendree won two straight 25-19 and 25-22. Harvard bounced back in the fourth, 25-22, though the Bearcats would seal the victory in set five, 15-10.
Schuele and Wetjen led McKendree in the win as they recorded 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Redshirt senior middle blocker Daniel Duggan also posted double-digit kills with 10 in addition to a season-high a .818 hitting percentage.
Freshman middle blocker Rolen Lively led the defensive charge with eight blocks on then day as six Bearcats recorded four or more blocks in the win. Poulsen served a game-high three aces and tied Wetjen for a team-high seven digs.
Junior middle blocker Trevor Schultz led Harvard with 12 kills as the Crimson drop to 3-3 overall on the season.
McKendree will be back at home this week hosting Missouri S&T at 7 p.m. on Friday and Long Island University on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Melvin Price Convocation Center.
