LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University men's volleyball recorded two wins at home this past weekend, defeating Missouri S&T in four sets on Friday and capturing a three-set victory over Long Island University on Saturday. The Bearcats improve to 5-2 on the season following the wins.
Against Missouri S&T, the Bearcats took the first two sets with scores of 25-9 and 25-20. The Miners would slip away with a 25-23 win in the third set before McKendree bounced back with another 25-9 win in set four.
Leading the Bearcats offensively was freshman opposite side hitter Bryce Wetjen who tallied 11 kills while redshirt freshman outside hitter Sam Hoskin and redshirt senior middle blocker Jacob Gall recorded nine and eight kills, respectively. Sophomore Tyler Tripp added three kills on four attempts to post a game-high .750 hitting percentage.
Defensively, freshman middle blocker Rolen Lively and junior setter Tyler Poulsen collected three blocks each. Poulsen also led in digs with five for the game.
As a team, the Bearcats posted a season-high .429 hitting percentage in the victory, including hitting .647 percent in the first set.
On Saturday, McKendree saw its first sweep of the season against Long Island, winning in three sets with scores of 25-22, 25-20, and 24-26.
Wetjen held the lead again in kills with 11 while sophomore outside hitter Kevin Schuele and Lively tallied eight kills each and redshirt junior Kyle Wilson added seven kills. Lively also recorded a team-high .667 hitting percentage as well as a team-high four blocks in the win.
Collectively, McKendree posted a .337 hitting percentage and tied its season high of 37 digs across the three sets. For the second game in a row, the Bearcats saw their highest hitting percentage in the first set at .500 percent.
For the two games, Poulsen combined for 72 assists, averaging 10.3 assists per game.
Coming up, the Bearcats will be on the road at Ohio State on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET followed by a game at Ball State on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET.
