Women's Hockey Shuts Out Buffaloes for Sweep at Home

Bearcats collect sixth-straight win via weekend sweep

O'FALLON, Ill. | McKendree Metro Rec Plex - McKendree University women's hockey (7-3) won its sixth-straight game on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Buffaloes of Colorado via 4-0 shutout. The Bearcats swept CU on the weekend after winning the Friday contest in commanding fashion, 12-1. McKendree will have a short break with its next games on November 4-5 at Midland in Fremont, Nebraska.

McKendree and Colorado began the second game of the weekend with a null first period with the Bearcats out-shooting the Buffaloes 14-5, but unable to find the back of the net.

In the second period, McKendree continued its Friday performance with a trio of goals as three different scorers found the back of the net. Senior forward Jaynee Smothers led the way with the eventual game-winner in the third minute as junior forward Brittney Kambeitz dished-out the assist. In the 11th minute of the period, sophomore forward Jayna Barnden found the back of the net for a power play score with junior defense Aria Groot and junior forward Kiley Hasenfratz adding the assists on the score. Less than two minutes after Barnden's score, Hasenfratz broke through to score her sixth goal of the campaign with the helper from a pair of freshmen in forward Julia Koski and defense Charlotte Cloutier. The goal by Hasenfratz put McKendree up 3-0 over the Buffaloes.

The Bearcats added one more insurance score in the third and final period of the weekend with sophomore forward Kerstyn Barron firing the goal in the 12th minute on another power play for McKendree. Barnden and freshman forward Abby Jeffers dished-off the assists on the fourth McKendree goal of the contest.

Sophomore goaltender Paige Hunt collected the victory in net, grabbing 12 saves in full-time.
