Men’s Water Polo Wins Two of Three at Erie Classic

Erie, Pa. - McKendree men's water polo competed at the WWPA Erie Classic where they competed against Salem University (15-3), Gannon University (7-8), and Mercyhurst University (3-11) finishing 2-1 over three games of conference action.

The Bearcats kicked off the weekend facing the Salem Tigers who sit atop the WWPA and continued to exert their prowess in the match against McKendree. After the first quarter the Bearcats jumped out to a 5-4 lead but were unable to hold on as they fell into an 11-7 hole at the half. The second half showed much of the same as McKendree fell 23-15. Freshman Yannick Robertson, sophomore Zach Callejas, and freshman Isaac Demski led the way with three goals each.

Later in the day the Bearcat combatants continued action against the Gannon Golden Knights, where they saw an even 5-5 first quarter but a dominant second quarter by the Bearcats outscoring the Golden Knights 6-1. Gannon rallied back in the second half, but it was too little too late as McKendree held on to win 18-16. Yannick Robertson stuffed the stat sheet as he recorded three goals, three assists, and five steals.

To close out the weekend the Bearcat pack competed against Mercyhurst University, where their win streak over the Lakers extended to 10 straight. Right from the start, McKendree leapfrogged into a 6-2 lead and never looked back. Outscoring the Lakers for four straight quarters the Bearcats defeated Mercyhurst 17-11. Senior Breno Tebet shined scoring six goals on six shots, and Isaac Demski added in four of his own to pioneer back to back wins.

The Bearcats are back in action next weekend Nov. 4-5 at the WWPA Morgantown Classic in West Virginia.
