QUINCY, Ill. - McKendree University women's basketball opened up the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home Classic hosted by Quincy University on Friday night. The Bearcats fell to Washburn University 80-64.
McKendree held a one-point lead over the Ichabods 17-16 after one quarter of play. Washburn came out with strong offense in the second quarter to take the lead 39-30. In the second half, the Bearcats would rally to come within five of the Ichabods' lead but could not overcome the deficit. The final score read in favor of Washburn, 80-64.
Leading the Bearcats offensively for the third consecutive game was junior guard Clare Breden who notched 17 points and a team-high five assists. Also in double figures for the contest was senior forward Naomi McDaniel with 15-point, 10-rebound double-double as well as senior guard Madyson Harper who tallied 10 points. Sophomore guard Georgia Duncan sank three three-pointers for nine points.
Defensively, McDaniel and senior forward Kristyn Mitchell each snagged two blocks while freshman Baylie Parks grabbed five defensive rebounds.
Up next, McKendree looks to catch its second win of the season against Hillsdale College on Saturday at 1pm.
