LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University women's volleyball topped No.20-ranked Quincy University on Friday night. The five-set Bearcat win marked only the second loss of the season for the Hawks as McKendree improved to 12-12 on the season.
Quincy slipped away with set one 25-23, but McKendree hit .279 to Quincy's .140 in the second set to take the set 25-17. Set three belonged to the Hawks 25-22 and a heated set four was claimed by the Bearcats 26-24. Set five saw seven score ties and five lead changes; ultimately, the Bearcats would prevail 15-13.
The Bearcats truly made the win a team effort with players reaching milestones in the victory. Senior defensive specialist Maddie Misner collected eight digs to surpass 1,000 career digs. Sophomore outside hitter Destiny Gray put down a career-high 24 kills to lead the game; two more Bearcats were in double digit kills including sophomore outside hitter Lauren Harris with 14 and senior right-side hitter Colleen Preusser with 12.
McKendree's defensive efforts were led by senior middle blocker Lauren McCurley who grabbed 10 blocks while Williams added a career-high six blocks to the total. Preusser posted 33 digs for a career high, besting her previous career high by six. Also in double-figure digs were Williams (19), sophomore libero Ashlyn Berczynski (18), and Harris (16).
As a team, McKendree captured a season-high 16 total blocks for the game.
Prior to the game, Williams was honored for reaching 2,000 career assists which she attained against Upper Iowa.
Up next, the Bearcats celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 4 with a 3 p.m. match against Illinois-Springfield.
