INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. | Great Lakes Valley Conference – McKendree University men's soccer earned five All-GLVC selections on Thursday night with senior defender Matteo Schubert, junior midfielder Philipp Schmidt, and freshman goalkeeper Christian Herluf all collecting second team honors while graduate midfielder Karson Huels and sophomore midfielder Rhys Davies were named to third team, as announced by the league office. The Bearcats finished fourth in the league, now heading to the semifinals of the conference tournament on Friday evening against top-seeded Illinois Springfield in East Peoria. 

SECOND TEAM | Matteo Schubert, Sr., D | Philipp Schmidt, Jr., MF | Christian Herluf, Fr., GK
Schubert, a native of Salzburg, Austria, added his first all-conference honor after being a constant presence for McKendree in his seasons on the pitch. Schubert, while helping the Bearcats to an outstanding defensive showing this season also tallied five assists with a goal, the first of his career. Schubert has 18 starts with over 1600 minutes played with his first collegiate score coming agianst UMSL on September 24. Schubert has started all games of his career, a total of 65 through this point in 2023. 

Schmidt adds his second all-GLVC honor this fall after being named third team in 2022. The Heidelberg, Germany-native has started all 18 of the Bearcats' games with nearly 1400 minutes on the pitch while helping coordinate and push forth McKendree's attack. The midfielder owns three goals and two assists on the campaign for eight points. Schmidt has started all but one game in his collegiate career (50/51).

Herluf tallies an All-GLVC selection after an oustanding year in net, which saw him win five #GLVCmsoc Defensive Player of the Week honors, including four straight to end the year. The four-straight weekly awards is a top-mark in the GLVC's history. The Odder, Denmark-native ranks near the top of all major goalkeeping categories with his 0.39 goals allowed average, his 0.833 save percentage, and a McKendree single-season shutout mark of 12, so far. The keeper has helped McKendree boast an impressive nine-straight clean sheet streak while only allowing one goal since the beginning of October. 

THIRD TEAM
Two Bearcats earned third team selections on the season with Huels and Davies, both first-time honorees for McKendree. Huels has started 14 of 17 games played this fall with one goal, the game-winner over William Jewell on September 17. Huels totals over 1300 minutes in the midfield, wreaking havoc for opposing attackers and defenders. Davies, who earned McKendree's first weekly honor of the season, tallied three goals and assists on the campaign with nearly 1600 minutes on the field for the Bearcats. Davies battled through early, scoring his first collegiate goal in the season-opening win at Ohio Dominican (8/31), marking the contest's game-winner.

UP NEXT | GLVC CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT - Semifinals
No.4-seed McKendree takes on top-seeded Illinois Springfield in the #GLVCmsoc semifinal matchup at Corwin Clatt Stadium on November 10 at 7:30PM. The Bearcats and Prairie Stars played to a draw in their regular season matchup on October 22 in Springfield, Illinois. 

The 2023 GLVC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament will be held Nov. 10 and 12 at Corwin Clatt Stadium in East Peoria, Ill., after the quarterfinals on Nov. 5 are hosted by the top-four seeds. This is the first year the event will be hosted at this venue and a return to a neutral site for both the men's and women's tournaments since the spring of 2021.
