MUNCIE, Ind. - McKendree University men's volleyball fell in four sets to Ball State in its second Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association contest of the week on the road. The Bearcats move to 5-4 overall on the season and 0-2 in the MIVA as they prepare for two home games this week.
Ball State claimed wins in the first two sets with scores of 25-21 and 25-23 while McKendree took the third set, 25-23. Ultimately, the Cardinals would seal the overall victory in set four, defeating the Bearcats 25-20.
As a team, the Bearcats recorded a .278 hitting percentage while the Cardinals posted a .333 percentage. Both teams delivered seven service aces and collected 34 digs, though the Cardinals would edge out the Bearcats on total blocks, 9 to 3.5.
McKendree was led by three players in double-digit kills including sophomore outside hitter Kevin Schuele with 15 kills, freshman opposite side hitter Bryce Wetjen with 14 kills, and redshirt junior outside hitter Kyle Wilson with 10 kills.
Redshirt senior middle blocker Daniel Duggan led the Bearcats in hitting percentage, tallying a .545 percentage with six kills for the four sets.
Junior setter Tyler Poulsen posted a career-high five aces for the contest, firing four of them set three. Poulsen also added 44 assists on the day.
Defensively, three players led with seven digs each including graduate student libero Francisco Comas, Poulsen, and Schuele. Freshman middle blocker Rolen Lively totaled three blocks to lead the Bearcats in blocking for the fifth consecutive game.
With the win, Ball State improves to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the MIVA. Junior opposite side hitter Dyer Ball led the Cardinals with 18 kills and 10 digs on the day.
Coming up, the Bearcats return home to the Melvin Price Convocation Center for a MIVA contest against Lindenwood on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m.
