Softball Splits with Purdue Northwest, Falls to Hillsdale

Bearcats to Lincoln University of Missouri in Home Opener on Tuesday

CHATHAM, Ill. - McKendree University softball went 1-2 on the weekend at the University of Illinois-Springfield Invitational in Chatham, Ill. The Bearcats move to 10-5 on the season as they host Lincoln University of Missouri on Tuesday, March 7.  

McKendree 1, Purdue Northwest 0
The Bearcats began the weekend with a close win against Purdue Northwest, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal the win. Sophomore infielder Heaven Lawrence drove in the lone run for McKendree. 

Junior pitcher Ellie Quaethem pitched all seven innings, facing 23 batters, recording 17 strikeouts, and allowing just one hit. McKendree totaled six hits with a 2-2 performance from freshman infielder Lauren Harris and 2-3 performance from junior utility player Reagan Cheely.  

McKendree 2, Hillsdale 5 
In the second game of the weekend, McKendree fell to Hillsdale as the Chargers gained a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Hillsdale would score one more run in the fifth inning before the Bearcats would get on the board with one run in the top of the sixth. Two more runs from the Chargers in the bottom of the sixth inning proved insurmountable for the Bearcats as McKendree tallied just one more run in the final half inning.  

At the plate, the Bearcats registered five hits to the Chargers' seven. Harris was 2-3 including a homerun, an RBI, and one run scored while junior outfielder Jordan Sapp posted a double for the contest. Quaethem delivered 13 strikeouts in six innings.  

McKendree 6, Purdue Northwest 12  
The Pride slipped away with the win over the Bearcats in their second matchup. Purdue Northwest scored 12 runs with nine hits while McKendree scored six runs on eight hits. Lawrence snagged two hits and scored two runs while senior utility player Olivia Stansbury grabbed two hits in the game. Harris also hit a double for an RBI. Sapp, Stansbury, junior outfielder Taylor Witges, freshman utility player Macy Brown, and freshman outfielder Jenna Getz drove in one hit apiece.  

Junior pitcher Sophia Koesterer started the game for the Bearcats, pitching two innings while sophomore pitcher Sydney Bires pitched four. Both pitchers recorded three strikeouts.

McKendree hosts its home-openers on Tuesday, March 7 with a double-header against Lincoln University of Missouri at Bearcat Field starting at 1 p.m.
