IRVINE, Calif. - McKendree University women's water polo hit the road for six games in California this past weekend, going 2-4 for the outing. The Bearcats move to 8-8 overall on the season and return to Illinois to face Augustana College this coming weekend.
McKendree started the weekend in Irvine, Calif., to face Westcliff University and Concordia University at the Woolett Aquatics Center. The Bearcats posted a dominating 18-9 win over Westcliff, led offensively by fifth-year senior center Abigial Burton with eight goals. Senior attacker Courtney Smith added three goals while graduate student attacker Jaleh Moaddeli tallied three assists in the win.
In the Bearcats' second game of the weekend, Concordia took the win, 11-7. Freshman attacker Jazmin Sandoval recorded three of McKendree's seven goals in the contest.
Against Cal State East Bay, McKendree narrowly fell in an 8-7 battle with three goals each from Moaddeli and Burton. However, the Bearcats would bounce back with another 17-9 win over Occidental College. Fifth-year senior center defender Danielle Borelli led with four goals while Burton and Moaddeli added another three goals apiece. Moaddeli also collected three steals.
McKendree fell to Biola 16-13 and Azusa Pacific 17-8 in its final games of the weekend. Three Bearcats grabbed three goals each against Biola including Burton, Borelli, and senior utility player Katelyn Rodrigue. Moaddeli and freshman attacker Johanna Rebelo each delivered three goals against Azusa Pacific.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Kane held the net for the Bearcats, collecting 58 saves across the six games.
Coming up, McKendree will be on the road at Augustana College on March 11 for a 1 p.m. game.
