Softball Snaps No.6 Greyhounds’ 18-Game Win Streak, Goes 1-1 in Doubleheader

Koesterer Delivers Shutout in Game Two

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - McKendree University softball split its doubleheader on the road at Indianapolis, falling in one Great Lakes Valley Conference contest 2-0 and overcoming the Greyhounds in the second game 7-0. The Bearcats improved to 22-9 overall and 8-4 in GLVC games to rank fourth in the league standings.  

In game one, the contest remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning as Indianapolis's Megan Nichols and Emily O'Connor fired back-to-back solo home runs to give the Greyhounds a two-run advantage. The Bearcats attempted to rally back in the top of the seventh inning but left the tying runners on base to fall in the first game, 2-0.  

Junior Ellie Quaethem tossed the complete game for the Bearcats, striking out nine batters and allowing four hits and two runs. At the plate, McKendree registered five hits including a double from senior Skyler Davis and singles from sophomore Heaven Lawrence, freshman Reagan Cheely, junior Taylor Witges, and freshman Kinsey Vergason.  

The Bearcats turned things around in the second game, holding the No.6-ranked Greyhounds to their first shutout of the season as well as delivering their first GLVC loss. Following the loss, the Greyhounds sport a 36-4 overall record and 11-1 record in the GLVC.  

Junior Sophia Koesterer pitched the shutout for McKendree, allowing just two hits striking out four batters. Koesterer improved her record to 6-3 on the season with the victory.  

The Bearcats recorded five hits and seven RBI in game two led by Cheely with two hits, an RBI single in the first inning and an RBI double in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Lauren Harris also batted in one run on a double while freshman Mollie Vetter drove in two runs on a double. Lawrence and Vergason added one RBI each for the win.  

Coming up, McKendree will be on the road this weekend to face Southwest Baptist on Saturday, April 15 at 12 p.m. and Rockhurst on Sunday, April 16 at 12 p.m. Both days will feature doubleheaders. McKendree's next home game on Saturday, April 22 will celebrate Senior Day.
