Bearcats led by two career-firsts in 2-0 shutout over Ohio Dominican

COLUMBUS, Ohio | Panther Stadium - McKendree University men's soccer kicked-off the fall sport season for the Bearcats with a 2-0 win over Ohio Dominican on Thursday evening, taking a first half lead and never looking back. The Bearcats were led with scores by sophomore midfielder Rhys Davies and freshman forward Bjorn Sigurdsson to improve to 1-0-0 on the season. The win marks back-to-back season-opening victories for McKendree, both 2-0 wins over the Panthers.

In the opening minutes of the contest, the Bearcats struck to take the lead with Davies firing a shot from the six-yard box. The process began with a corner kick for McKendree and was followed up with a battle for possession in the attacking third. Freshman midfielder Jay Sangha dropped a high-arcing pass in front of the goal while Davies blasted the score at the 4:18 mark. McKendree led 1-0 at the halftime horn.

In the second 45, the Bearcats fired two shots with another finding the back of the goal as the freshman Sigurdsson collected his first collegiate score in the 64th minute of action. On the goal, senior defender Matteo Schubert gathered his first point of the season, dishing out the assist to Sigurdsson for the insurance goal.

The Bearcats held the 2-0 lead for the remainder of the contest to improve to 2-0-1 over the Panthers all-time.

Freshman goalkeeper Christian Herluf went full-time in net for his first collegiate victory with four saves versus ODU.
