Men's Soccer Opens #GLVCmsoc Slate with Road Victory

Bearcats ground the Hawks to start conference season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. | Bourke Field - McKendree University men's soccer (3-0-2, 1-0-0 GLVC) kicked-off its Great Lakes Valley Conference season on Friday night with a strong road win over Rockhurst, 1-0. The Bearcats stayed unbeaten with the victory while tallying their third three-point contest of the campaign. McKendree takes the win as sophomore forward Chris Moore fired his second score of the year with a follow-up shot. The Bearcats remain on the west side of Missouri for their next outing at William Jewell on September 17 at 2:30 PM. 

McKendree was in control for the first half, totaling five shots while garnering 10 corner kick opportunities. The Bearcats kept pressure on the Hawks back line throughout the night and broke the ice in the 42nd minute as senior midfielder Fetiol Hyke collected a long-ball pass, firing the shot that ricocheted off the keeper. Moore followed Hyke's attempt up, gathering the loose ball on the rebound and firing it into the net. Hyke got the assist on the goal. McKendree held a 1-0 advantage at the time of intermission. 

The contest was a battle in the second half with the Bearcats protecting their lead and the Hawks looking to threaten. McKendree's line and goalkeeper, freshman Christian Herluf, held true for the third shutout of the year.

McKendree out-shot RU, 6-5, while earning more corners on a 10-2 count. 

NOTES
McKendree remained unbeaten through five games, marking its best start of the Gyllenborg era. 

Sophomore forward Chris Moore fired his second goal of the season, putting him in a tie for team lead with sophomore defender / midfielder Rhys Davies. It was the second goal of Moore's career. 

Freshman goalkeeper Christian Herluf held the net for full time earning his third shutout of the year and improving to 3-0-2 in goal. he grabbed one save in the victory.
