LIBERTY, Mo. - McKendree University men's soccer (4-0-2, 2-0-0 GVLC) remained unbeaten on the year with another true road victory in league play on Sunday afternoon, defeating William Jewell, 2-1. The Bearcats recorded back-to-back victories for the second time this year, winning the opening GLVC weekend games while beginning the year with two wins in Ohio. McKendree returns to its home pitch for the next contest as it hosts UMSL on Sunday, September 24, at 2:30 PM.
The Bearcats and Cardinals battled throughout the first half with Jewell taking the lead in the 25th minute via unassisted goal. McKendree pushed following the score to even the game with a ball crossed into the box before junior midfielder
Philipp Schmidt gathered and scored his first of the year. Sophomore defender / midfielder
Rhys Davies dished-out the assist on Schmidt's score. McKendree and Jewell were locked up at one goal each going into the intermission while the Bearcats led in shots (4-2) and corners (3-1).
The second half was a tightly contested bout with both squads firing multiple shots and earning corners while possession proved to be a near split. McKendree broke through in the 61st minute with a corner kick by
Matteo Schubert, who placed the ball high for his teammates. Graduate midfielder
Karson Huels lept to connect on the header and put it into the net.
The Bearcats did not concede again in the contest, taking the win and staying unbeaten this fall.
NOTES
McKendree continues its best start of the Gyllenborg-era with the victory, improving to 4-0-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the GLVC.

Philipp Schmidt recorded his first goal of the season in the first half, receiving the assist from
Rhys Davies.
Graduate midfielder
Karson Huels tallied his first score of the season, which proved to be the game-winner against the Cardinals. The score came off a Bearcat corner, which was sent in by senior defender
Matteo Schubert.
Freshman goalkeeper
Christian Herluf added another win to his resume, grabbing a save in the victory.
