Men's Soccer Remains Unbeaten with Another Road Win

Bearcats handle William Jewell in Liberty

LIBERTY, Mo. - McKendree University men's soccer (4-0-2, 2-0-0 GVLC) remained unbeaten on the year with another true road victory in league play on Sunday afternoon, defeating William Jewell, 2-1. The Bearcats recorded back-to-back victories for the second time this year, winning the opening GLVC weekend games while beginning the year with two wins in Ohio. McKendree returns to its home pitch for the next contest as it hosts UMSL on Sunday, September 24, at 2:30 PM.

The Bearcats and Cardinals battled throughout the first half with Jewell taking the lead in the 25th minute via unassisted goal. McKendree pushed following the score to even the game with a ball crossed into the box before junior midfielder Philipp Schmidt gathered and scored his first of the year. Sophomore defender / midfielder Rhys Davies dished-out the assist on Schmidt's score. McKendree and Jewell were locked up at one goal each going into the intermission while the Bearcats led in shots (4-2) and corners (3-1).

The second half was a tightly contested bout with both squads firing multiple shots and earning corners while possession proved to be a near split. McKendree broke through in the 61st minute with a corner kick by Matteo Schubert, who placed the ball high for his teammates. Graduate midfielder Karson Huels lept to connect on the header and put it into the net.

The Bearcats did not concede again in the contest, taking the win and staying unbeaten this fall.
