LEBANON, Ill. – McKendree University men's volleyball captured a four-set victory in its first-ever match against Queens University of Charlotte on Thursday night. The Bearcats improve to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association as they prepare for another game against Queens on Friday evening.
A tight set one ended with a 28-26 win for the Royals but would not deter the Bearcats in the next three sets. McKendree took set two 25-22, set three 25-19, and an exciting set four 33-31.
As a team, McKendree tallied 61 total kills and 11.5 blocks compared to Queens's 6.0 blocks. The Bearcats delivered eight aces for the third time this season.
Leading the Bearcats in kills was junior outside hitter Kevin Schuele with 18 kills and five aces. Redshirt junior right side hitter Nikos Xydakis added 15 kills while junior outside hitter Sam Hoskin added 14 kills.
Redshirt senior setter Tyler Poulsen sealed a double-double for the night of a career-high 52 assists and 10 digs.
Defensively, junior middle hitter D'Aaron McCraney snagged five blocks in addition to four blocks each from Xydakis, Schuele, and sophomore middle blocker Rolen Lively.
Up next, McKendree faces Queens again at home on Friday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m.
