HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Bearcats opened the 2024 campaign under first-year head coach Tim Gurnow as they headed south. They battled the University of Alabama at Huntsville Chargers on Thursday, February 8th for a doubleheader. The Chargers took both games by the scores of 10-6 and 12-11.
Game One
The Chargers jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three innings. In the top of the fourth, Brandon Roth hit the first long ball of the season for the Bearcat to make it 4-1. After Kyle Czarnecki doubled down the left field line, Brody Macak doubled to left field that scored Czarnecki. Chryan Cruse singled to center field, which scored Macak to make it a 4-3 game. With runners on the corners, Harrison Toone singled to left center, but an error by the UAH center fielder let the Bearcats take the 5-4 lead.
Michael Paule hit a deep shot of his own in the top of the 6th to give McKendree the 6-4 lead. The Chargers proceeded to score six unanswered runs and took the game.

Game Two
The nightcap saw McKendree take an early 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st. Paule hit his 2nd home run of the day to start the scoring. Czarnecki singled to left field that scored Roth for the 2-0 lead.
UAH took the 3-2 in their half of the 1st. The Bearcats answered with six runs in the top of the 2nd. Noah Nelson singled to left field that scored Cruse. Toone recorded an RBI single of his own to give the Bearcats the lead back at 4-3. Paule continued his hot bat with an RBI single to make it 5-3. The lead was stretched out to 8-3 after Joey Kossina reached on a fielders' choice to score Toone and Macak doubled to left center for 2 RBIs.
The lead went to 9-3 on a Kossina RBI groundout in the top of the fourth. UAH tied it with six runs of their own in the bottom of the 5th. Paule hit his 3rd home run of the day, this time of the two run variety to make it 11-9.
The Chargers won it in the bottom of the 7th on 3 runs.
