MACOMB, Ill. – The Bearcats (2-2, 1-0 GLVC) stepped out of conference and division as they battled FCS-member Western Illinois University on Saturday, September 28th in Macomb, Illinois. The Leathernecks took the game by the score of 49-32.
On the opening drive of the contest, the Bearcats were able to move the ball as they eight play drive ended in a Kaleb Barry 25-yard field goal to make it 3-0 McKendree. The Leathernecks countered with an 11-play, 82 yard drive which found the end zone to make it 7-3.
McKendree capped another long drive in which they held the ball for six and a half minutes ending in Barry's second field goal of the evening to make it a one point game. WIU took one play to go 74 yards late in the 2nd quarter to extend their lead at 14-6. Forcing the Bearcats to punt, WIU made it 21-6 with 34 seconds left in the opening half. After two untimed downs to end the half, Barry converted his third field goal to make it 21-9.
WIU got the ball to start the second half and took advantage by finding the end zone to make it a 28-9 game. Once again, Barry put McKendree on the board with his fourth field goal in the middle of the third quarter which made it 28-12. The Leathernecks capped the scoring of the third quarter with five minutes left to make it 35-12.
The fourth quarter can now be known as the Eddie Clark quarter with him accounting for all 20 points on runs of 16, 27, and 7.
Last time a McKendree kicker hit four field goals in a game was Steven O'Block in 2016 against Missouri S&T.
