Women’s Volleyball Falls at Day One of Midwest Region Crossover

HAMMOND, Ind. – McKendree's women's volleyball dropped two matches at the first day of the Midwest Region Crossover in Hammond, Indiana. In the Bearcats' match against Purdue Northwest, the team fell 0-3 with the scores of 17-25, 16-25, 21-25. McKendree battled in their second match against Northwood, losing 1-3 with the scores of 16-25, 19-25, 25-22, 21-25.

The Bearcats faced the Pride of Purdue Northwest in their first match of the tournament. The Pride outscored the Bearcats 55 points to 44 points while recording 39 kills compared to McKendree's 26. The Pride's defense at the net dominated over the Bearcats, finishing with 12 blocks while McKendree finished with 6. The Pride also picked up 63 digs compared to the Bearcats 42. McKendree was led offensively by graduate outside hitter Emily-Kate Lonergan who produced 8 kills. Lonergan was followed by middle blocker duo, redshirt sophomore Cayden DeSantiago and sophomore Avery Guisinger, who both finished with 4 kills each. Freshman setter Peyton Uptgraft orchestrated the offense with 17 assists. Defensively, senior libero Ashlyn Berczynski picked up 13 digs followed by Uptgraft with 11.

In McKendree's second match against the Timberwolves of Northwood, the Timberwolves outscored the Bearcats with 75 points to 62 points. Northwood finished with 64 kills compared to McKendree's 50. The defensive comparison between McKendree and Northwood was even at 80 digs for each team. With 13 kills, senior outside hitter Destiny Gray led the team. Gray was followed by middle blocker duo DeSantiago with 10 kills and Guisinger with 8. Uptgraft finished with 37 assists on the match. Berczynski led the defense with 4 digs, followed by Uptgraft and Gray with 19 and 8 digs respectively.

The Bearcats will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 18, for day two of the Midwest Region Crossover. McKendree will be on Court 5 at the Hammond Sportsplex as they take on Malone University at 11:30 am.
