Men's Soccer Blasts UIndy in Friday Night Bout

Bearcats take place over Greyhounds in league standings

LEBANON, Ill. | Leemon Field - McKendree University men's soccer (6-4-4, 6-2-3 GLVC) tamed the Hounds on Friday night with a 3-2 final over UIndy, earning its first win over Indianapolis since 2019. The Bearcats scored the first two goals of the game to hold a strong lead over their adversary before hammering down the final nail in the 86th minute. McKendree now hosts Lewis in its next and final home game of the regular season slate on October 26 with a 2:30PM kick off.

The contest loomed with GLVC-rival UIndy coming to town and the game played out to be a barn-burner as the two squads totaled five goals. McKendree struck first in the 20th minute as freshman midfielder Matthias Roitner blasted his first collegiate goal with freshman defender Alonso Romero dishing out the helper. McKendree held its 1-0 advantage into the half while leading in shots, 9-7 (5-3), and corner kicks, 5-2.

The second half saw the Bearcats put up an insurance score early as Romero then tallied his own score, unassisted, in the 52nd minute of action to make it a 2-0 contest. The goal was Romero's second of the 2025 campaign. Then McKendree handled its own for over 20 minutes of play before the Hounds snuck one past, cutting the Bearcat lead to a single goal at 2-1. McKendree did not let up in the latter end of the second half, pushing for an additional insurance goal, which found its way to the home squad in the 86th minute as sophomore forward Morgan Dance fired his third of the year, marking the eventual game-winning goal. UIndy managed one more score late but to no avail as the stifling McKendree defense pounced on the Greyhounds for the remainder of the contest.

McKendree moved up in the rankings behind the win, shifting into third place in the league standings as they head into the final three games of the regular season. The win also marked the first victory over Indianapolis since 2019, with the two squads sitting at one win each and three draws over the stretch.
