Women's Soccer Shuts Out Lewis, Takes Reins in GLVC

Bearcats tally 10th win of the season in shutout victory

LEBANON, Ill. | Leemon Field - No.24 McKendree University women's soccer (10-1-4, 10-1-1 GLVC) added a fourth-straight win while moving to the top spot in the GLVC on a rainy Sunday afternoon as the Bearcats grounded the Flyers, 1-0. The Bearcats nabbed six points to move to 31 on the fall in conference play while also marking an 11th-straight winning season in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Bearcats also celebrated Senior Day prior to the contest, celebrating goalkeeper Maicy Mueller, forward Kennedy Newman, forward Karin Tebelius, and midfielder Abbey Ondrus. 24th-ranked McKendree looks to capture a fifth GLVC Regular Season title next weekend as they head to Upper Iowa and Quincy on October 31 and November 1 to finish their regular season slate.

The match up between the Bearcats and Flyers was a battle once again, with one goal being a difference again as the game was neck and neck throughout. The two squads both fired six shots in the first half with both putting three on frame over the first 45 minutes of action. McKendree and Lewis exited the first half knotted at nil-nil.

In the latter half of play, the Bearcats broke through early with a quick counter in the 54th minute. Junior defender Zoe Cormier launched a long ball, locating sophomore forward Maddie Mauch, who collected the pass and fired away to find the back of the net. Mauch put the Bearcats up 1-0, sending the Flyers into a frenzy. McKendree used physicality to hold an upper hand in the second half with zero shots on-goal by their adversary, allowing the home squad to hold their advantage.
