LEBANON, Ill. – In McKendree's match against the Prairie Stars of Illinois Springfield, the Bearcats battled and protected their home court in a 4-set win. The Bearcats came out hot, taking the first two sets 25-23 and 25-15. Illinois Springfield fought off McKendree in the third set, 19-25, but the Bearcats could not be stopped winning the fourth set and taking the match 25-22.
As a team, McKendree recorded 54 kills on the match. Senior outside hitter Destiny Gray was unstoppable, leading all players with 20 kills. Gray finished with a hitting efficiency of .290 percent, only making 2 errors over the 4-set match. This impressive offensive performance earned Gray a season high in kills (20). Gray also added in an assist and an ace, scoring 21.5 points on the contest. Freshman setter Peyton Uptgraft distributed 39 assists, making McKendree's offensive production so efficient.
Behind the service line, the Bearcats recorded 8 aces. Uptgraft and junior defensive specialist Brielle Crose both grabbed 3 aces on the match.
Defensively the Bearcats ended with 89 digs being led by senior libero Ashlyn Berczynski. Berczynski picked up 30 digs, earning herself a season and career high. Berczynski also contributed a season and career high of 12 assists and an ace to elevate the Bearcats dominate performance. Uptgraft followed Berczynski's defensive effort by notching in 15 digs. At the net the Bearcats tallied 8 blocks with freshman middle blocker Megan Bishton leading the team with 5 blocks.
The Bearcats will be back on the road Oct. 9th-11th as they take on Truman State University and Upper Iowa University. McKendree faces Truman State on Oct. 9th at 6:00 pm in Kirksville, Mo. The Bearcats then will travel to Fayette, Ia. to compete against Upper Iowa at 3:00 pm on Oct. 11th.
