Women’s Volleyball Falls in Five-Set Heartbreak at Drury

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – McKendree drops the conference match up against the Drury Panthers in a five-set battle. The Bearcats started the match with the 2-0 advantage with the scores of 27-25, 25-16. The Panthers fought back taking the last 3 sets, successfully completing the reverse sweep over McKendree with the scores of 23-25, 21-25, 11-15. The Bearcats fought until the end and had a match full of season and career highs for multiple players.  

The Bearcats ended this thrilling match with 57 kills, just one short of Drury's 58 kills. McKendree was hitting at a higher efficiency with a percentage of .160 and Drury was only hitting at a .144 percent. Senior outside hitter Destiny Gray was McKendree's got to offensive option, recording a season high 19 kills over 5 sets. Freshman setter Peyton Uptgraft guided the offense dishing out a season and career high 39 assists. Despite the Bearcats better offensive performance, it was not enough to outlast the Panthers on their home court.

McKendree had a dominate defensive game, finishing with 96 digs collectively while Drury only tallied 90. Senior libero Ashlyn Berczynski led the back court with a season high 25 digs throughout the five-set match. Berczynski is 3 digs shy from reaching a career milestone of 1,000 digs. Gray added in a season high of 21 digs while sophomore outside Paige Parant noted a season and career high 19 digs. At the net, the Bearcats collected 12 blocks, 3 short from Drury's 15. McKendree was led by freshman middle blocker Megan Bishton with a season high 6 blocks. Bishton was followed by Gray and sophomore middle blocker Avery Guisinger who each recorded 3. This was a season high for Gray.

The Bearcats are now sitting with a 1-1 record in GLVC play after the first weekend of conference competition. McKendree will be back at home Oct. 3rd-4th as they take on Qunicy University and the University of Illinois Springfield. They face Quincy on the 3rd for their breast cancer awareness pink out match. On the 4th, they go against Illinois Springfield for their youth night.
