No.16 Women's Soccer Clears William Jewell 4-0 on Senior Day

Three Bearcats score in dominant affair over Cardinals while celebrating eight seniors

LEBANON, Ill. | Leemon Field - 16th-ranked McKendree University women's soccer (12-2-0, 8-2-0 GLVC) celebrated eight outstanding seniors on Sunday with a dominant showing and victory, 4-0, over the Cardinals of William Jewell. The eight senior Bearcats included Peyton Baker, Emily Baker, Maggie Gleckler, Georgia Cox, Aubrey Andrews, McKenna Hickey, Miranda Malcom, and Zoe Cormier with pregame ceremonies honoring the contributions and successes of the octet. Three players led the Bearcats to the victory with goals, including junior forward Maddie Mauch (x2), senior defender Zoe Cormier, and senior midfielder Georgia Cox while senior goalkeeper Peyton Baker earned the shutout in net. McKendree finishes out its home regular season slate on Wednesday, October 14, against Missouri-St. Louis at 5:00PM at Leemon Field.

The Bearcats began senior day with celebrations for the senior class along with an alumni outing for Coach Strange's athletes, stretching from his early days with the Bearcats up to recent classes. McKendree's first half was highlighted by control and forward pressure as 17 shots were sent and 10 were put on frame plus multiple cross-bar chances. Breaking through to get the lead took a length of time but in the 22nd minute, the Bearcats punched through. Mauch, the GLVC's offensive leader in goals, points, game-winners, and shots on-goal, found the back of the net after swiping a clearance attempt from the Cardinals, her 13th goal of the year and eventual sixth game-winner. The Bearcats led their adversary, 1-0, at the conclusion of the first half.

In the second half, the Bearcats kept up the pressure and extended the lead to a pair of goals in the 53rd minute of play. The second goal of the day was sent in by the head of Cormier off the Rochester-connect, a corner via Gleckler. The 2-0 advantage held for McKendree until the 63d minute when Mauch connected again, her 14th score of the campaign, following a crafty move past her defender to make the contest 3-0. The day was capped with an absolute missile launched by Cox in the 79th minute, who previously put one off the crossbar, headlining her senior day celebrations with a score.

McKendree dominated the day behind 34 shots, 19-plus on goal with its crossbar attempts, while collecting nine corner kicks. Baker, who got the start in goal, grabbed one save while her defense allowed just four shots, earning the shutout victory.

Ten Bearcats sent shots on the day with nine adding on-frame attempts. Mauch and Andrews each put four on-goal while Cormier, Gleckler, Cox, and sophomore forward Khiyah Perkins each added two.
