SCOUTING THE LAST OUTING

The No.23 men's basketball team pushed its win streak to seven after a back-and-forth GLVC showdown against the University of Illinois Springfield on Saturday, February 7th at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center in Lebanon, Illinois.

The fifth-year forward Noah Franklin (Cobden, Ill.) wasted no time getting his team going by scoring on five of the Bearcats' first seven points to start, including rhythm catch-and-shoot three from the top of the key. UIS would take their first lead of the afternoon just moments after the mentioned start to go up by two. The next few minutes saw Franklin and sophomore guard Rini Harris (O'Fallon, Ill.) muscle their respective ways in to convert on the and one opportunities, as freshman guard Andrew Moore (Montgomery County, Mo.) would too power his way in to give him a quiet six points midway through the first half. A two-handed flush by Franklin erupted the home crowd, with Moore displaying his spacing as he solely led his squad to close out on a 7-4 run to take a 35-27 lead heading into the locker room. Harris kept the aggression going into half number two by getting himself to the basket on a couple of early possessions with Moore knocking down his second triple of the game thus far. With an 8-0 spurt by UIS, Moore led the charge in a responding 12-2 run that was capped off by a deep ball from the wing by sophomore forward Wyatt Zellers (Scottsburg, Ind.). An 11-2 run by UIS was able to cut their deficit to three, but a corner three by Franklin in front of his home bench and via an offensive rebound pushed their lead back to seven as the combination of Franklin, Harris, and Moore would conjoin on McKendree's next 16 points to keep their distance. The Bearcats made due on their free throws down the final stretch to fend the Prairie Stars off from stealing on their home floor, with McKendree coming away with the crucial 77-69 GLVC win. Moore tabbed a career-high of 25 points on 8-for-15 (53.3%) shooting from the floor, including a pair of three-point shots to go with 11 rebounds, which tied his career-high. Franklin dropped in 19 points on 5-for-9 (55.5%) scoring with also a pair of shots from deep to go with nine boards and two blocked shots. Harris rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Bearcats, with six rebounds, and filled the stat sheet with an assist, a steal, and a block.

HISTORY SHOWCASE

Against Indianapolis, this will be the 23rd meeting as a member of NCAA Division II. UIndy has won the past six outings by an average of 9.5 points, with McKendree's last win coming on March 11th, 2023, in the first round of the NCAA Regionals held on the Greyhounds' campus. The Greyhounds hold a lopsided 18-4 lead in the series, with all four of the Bearcats' wins coming from the 2019-20 to 2022-23 seasons.

Against Lewis, it will also be a tough challenge, as the series leads in the Flyers' favor 19-4, heading into the 24th matchup in the NCAA Division II era. However, the Bearcats won the most recent outing 68-44 in Lebanon after faltering in the previous four meetings. McKendree last won in Romeoville on December 19th of 2020 [70-52], as they snagged two of the three-game consecutive road stretch in the series.

KNOW THE FOES

The Greyhounds were picked at number six in this season's GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll. They have not had much of a successful rhythm as of late, but did win their last outing at Maryville University 98-67, making it three victories in their last four outings. They are sitting at 12-11 overall on the season and a healthy 10-5 in conference play, with one of their marquee wins coming at McKendree on January 4th [82-75].

The Flyers are having a rough season on their hands after being picked right in front of the Bearcats in the preseason poll at 7th, as the team up north posts a current 4-18 overall slate with a 2-12 mark in GLVC action. Lewis has lost their last nine games dating back to January 10th and has only posted a win streak of two just once (December 6th-13th). Prior to their matchup against McKendree, the Flyers will face Maryville on Thursday, February 12th in Romeoville, for a battle between the two teams at the bottom of the conference.

WE'RE GOIN' UP, UP, UP

McKendree has retained their spot at No.23 in this week's NABC Coaches Poll with 50 points, making it the second time in their NCAA Division II history (since 2012-13) of appearing on the national scale.

The team has been knocking on the door all season long prior to getting ranked, as they have been receiving votes by fellow DII coaches in six different poll releases.

STRRREEEEAAAK!

The McKendree Bearcats are riding their way with ease down the final stretch of the regular season, as they have won seven straight games dating back to January 15th, and are winning by an average margin of 10.3 points.

Their seven consecutive is the program's best since the 2022-23 season, where they won eight straight, which included the last three regular season outings, all three GLVC Tournament games, and the first two rounds of the NCAA Regionals.

COFFEE IS FOR CLOSERS

The Bearcats are one of America's best closers during the stages of crunch time, as they are a perfect 17-0 when holding the lead at the final two-minute mark in regulation. Even more impressive, is when the game has five minutes remaining, to where McKendree is also a perfect 18-0, which matches their win total.

The team is 1-4 when being down at the two-minute stamp, and a goose egg of 0-4 when trailing with five minutes left.
