[Upper Iowa] [Quincy]
SCOUTING THE LAST OUTING
The team's seven game win streak heading into last week came to an end in the hands of the University of Indianapolis on Thursday, February 12th, as they squad was able to rebound comfortably in their return to the central time zone, where they would beat in-state Lewis University on Saturday, February 14th.
Against Indianapolis, McKendree jumped to a 5-0 start with veterans Cha'Vez Woods (Louisville, Ky.) and Noah Franklin (Cobden, Ill.) getting the close range shot and a three-ball from the top of the key, respectively. After a breakaway dunk by the UIndy offense, Woods would continue to keep the drive alive by scoring his team's next five points to take a 10-2 lead. After an 8-2 run by the Greyhounds, a corner three-pointer by another veteran senior in Caleb Burton (O'Fallon, Ill.) gave the McKendree squad their third trey already in the game, as it initiated a well-responded 7-0 spurt. A tomahawk slam dunk by Woods silenced the road crowd at Nicoson Hall after the Greyhounds had snuck their way back to within one with seven and a half minutes left in the first half. A couple of inside layups by the Kentucky native and redshirt junior Justin King (Mascoutah, Ill.) could not match an 11-4 spurt by UIndy, to be down to the Greyhounds 29-31 at halftime. Freshman guard Andrew Moore (Montgomery County, Mo.) gave the Bearcats their first four points of half number two, and was followed by an outside shot from Woods to give him 16 points so far on the evening. McKendree retook the lead after sophomore guard Rini Harris (O'Fallon, Ill.) buried two triples on back-to-back possessions to take the 47-41 advantage. Yet, the Bearcat advantage would only hold for a short while, as UIndy and their guard Carmelo Harris put the squad on his back for a personal 8-0 spurt, including a pair of three-point shots to take a one-point lead. That would soon turn into a massive 17-3 run for the Greyhounds to take an eight-score lead with a hair over eight minutes left in regulation. With UIndy looking to extend its lead with a driving jam, Franklin was able to trail with a ferocious swat to keep him and his teammates alive. In the final minute of the game, the Greyhounds made their mark from the line as the Bearcats banged in four three-point makes, two of which coming via Woods, but it would fall short of snagging the road win, as the opposition would win narrowly, 79-77, to fend off any mindset of revenge by McKendree. Woods recorded his second 30-point game of the season, as he was one short of his career-high with 31 points on 10-for-18 (55.6%) shooting from the floor, 5-for-11 (45.5%) from three, and a perfect 6-for-6 (100%) from the charity stripe. Harris finished with 13 points with seven boards and two each of assists and swats. Moore rounded out the double-figure scoring with 12 points on 5-for-9 (55.6%) scoring, along with four rebounds, an assist, and a steal.
Against Lewis, It was a shootout at the Neil Carey Arena to start the game off for the two sides, with Lewis banging in a pair of three-point shots while guards Woods and Harris knocked down two of their own with Franklin going up for the lay-in from a dish to him inside. After a 10-2 run by the Flyers over the course of the subsequent three and a half minutes of play, McKendree then scored 13 unanswered points with Franklin contributing on nine of that number by continuing his force down low. Up by seven at that point, the Bearcats would keep afloat for the remainder of the first half, where they would end up eight with a 34-26 lead heading into the locker room. Both squads sank in eight points to open up the second period prior to the Flyers' hitting their mark from long range to cut the deficit to just one point with 15:13 left in the game. Yet, the momentum would shift right back into McKendree's hands, where they would utilize a 9-0 spurt behind a couple of made buckets by Harris. The O'Fallon Product and Woods would split on McKendree's next eight points, where they would lead by 11. Lewis made a final push in getting the game to within single digits, but a shot from beyond the arc by Woods capped off any chances of a comeback, as McKendree would move forward to win 69-59. Franklin dropped in a team-high 20 points on an efficient 8-for-13 (61.5%) to go with eight rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals. Woods contributed 17 points on the evening with an abundant six assists and two rebounds. Harris had 16 points on 5-for-8 (62.5%) shooting, including a pair of three-point shots, along with five boards and also a pair of assists and steals.
HISTORY SHOWCASE
Against Upper Iowa, it would be just the fourth matchup ever in the NCAA Division II era, as the Peacocks joined the conference at the start of the 2023-24 season. UIU has won two of the previous three meetings, including the most recent outing, where they won 84-82 in overtime in Fayette. McKendree came away victorious in the game prior, winning 81-80, also on the road. The lone game in Lebanon was a 97-83 win for the Peacocks.
Against Quincy, it will be the 18th meeting between the two schools since becoming a member of the NCAA Division II, as the Bearcats hold the most recent success in winning seven of the last nine matchups. The Hawks have not beaten McKendree in Lebanon since January 18th of 2018, which has been just one of only two times making that feat. The Bearcats hold the 9-8 advantage overall in the series.
KNOW THE FOES
The Peacocks have made an impressive start to the season after being picked 11th in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll, as they flew their way into the NABC national rankings for a handful of weeks. Upper Iowa started 11-2 on the season, before flipping the script in proceeding with a 2-6 mark in their next eight outings. The team is coming off a 2-0 week in Fayette last weekend in defeating the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Maryville University to push their record to 16-8 overall and 11-6 in conference play.
The Hawks have not found much of a rhythm all season, as the in-state foes are putting up a 9-15 record overall and a 4-12 posting in GLVC action. Quincy, who was picked 13th in the conference preseason poll, has won multiple games in a row just once (December 16th-17th) and has recently lost seven of their last eight outings, as they are preparing to play Maryville in St. Louis this Thursday before taking on the Bearcats.
SENIOR STATS
The Bearcats will honor three members of their graduating class in the game against Quincy this Saturday, as forward Noah Franklin (Cobden, Ill.), guard Cha'Vez Woods (Louisville, Ky.), and Caleb Burton (O'Fallon, Ill.) will be part of the three-man celebration.
Franklin has played two of his four-year career (plus a redshirt in 2021-22) in a McKendree uniform after spending the first two seasons with the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University. He has accumulated so far 957 points, 513 rebounds, 90 assists, 43 steals, and 75 blocks in 107 total games played (90 starts).
Woods also spent two years in Lebanon after playing with Kankakee Community College within the NJCAA for a pair. Up to this point, he has totaled 1,245 points, 296 rebounds, 138 assists, 91 steals, and 16 blocked shots in 108 career games (77 starts).
Burton also spent a couple of his seasons wearing McKendree across his chest after spending two years at Black Hawk College-Moline within the NJCAA. So far in his career, he has registered 223 points, 65 rebounds, 36 assists, 20 steals, and six blocks in 40 games played (13 starts).
20... THE NUMBER TO KNOW
McKendree is one win away from notching their 20th win for the second time ever in their NCAA Division II era. The only other time they accomplished that feat was during the historical 2022-23 season, when they finished with 20 total victories in 33 games played after winning the GLVC Tournament and making a run in the NCAA Regionals. This will be the only time crossing the plateau during the regular season.
COFFEE IS FOR CLOSERS
The Bearcats are one of America's best closers during the stages of crunch time, as they are a perfect 18-0 when holding the lead at the final two-minute mark in regulation. Even more impressive, is when the game has five minutes remaining, to where McKendree is also a perfect 19-0, which matches their win total.
The team is 1-5 when being down at the two-minute stamp, and a goose egg of 0-5 when trailing with five minutes left.
BEST YOU START NOW
McKendree is 18-3 when holding the lead heading into halftime, which is an 85.7% success rate, as the team is just 1-2 (33.3%) when trailing at the break. The Bearcats have yet to be tied up at that mark so far this season.
The Bearcats have held a halftime lead in eight of their last 10 outings, dating back to January 10th against William Jewell.
