Lebanon, IL - McKendree University and the McKendree Athletic Department are both deeply saddened to report the recent passing of beloved former Head Football Coach, Carl Poelker. Coach Poelker was a stoic figure in the modern history of McKendree Athletics, and will continue to leave his mark.
In 1995, Former President Dr. James Dennis tasked Carl Poelker with reviving the McKendree Football program that had been resurfaced for the first time in more than 40 years. Instantly, he laid the foundation of what would become one of the greatest legacies in Bearcat Athletics, a foundation Dr. Dennis will remember forever.
"Carl Poelker was more than a football coach. He was a builder of men. During his 17 years leading the Bearcat program, he helped establish McKendree football as a program defined by success both on and off the field. But what always mattered most to Carl were the numbers that never made the scoreboard: the national scholar-athletes, the Academic All-Conference honorees, and a graduation rate that stood at 99 percent. He used to say those were the real victories, and he was right. That is the true measure of his legacy at McKendree, and it will endure for generations to come. He will be deeply missed."
McKendree University President Daniel Dobbins agrees with the sentiment of how Poelker developed the multi-faceted student-athlete.
"Coach Poelker was one of those rare leaders who brought success and impact while developing the whole person. His influence extended far beyond our football program, helping shape McKendree into the university it is today. We celebrate his life, his legacy, and the indelible mark he left on our community. He will be greatly missed."
McKendree University Director of Athletics Anthony Francis preached how important it was that Poelker accomplished what he did because of the way in which he did it.Â
"Coach Poelker's vision for McKendree football was about so much more than wins and losses. He rebuilt this program from the ground up and did it the right way, with an unwavering commitment to character that defined everything he touched. His impact on our athletic program and this university will not be forgotten."
While Coach Poelker guided the Bearcats to 117 wins, and remains the program's winning percentage leader, his legacy is highlighted by the lives of the student-athletes he affected. Poelker's teams amassed an impressive 35 All-Americans: Adam Clapp, Andrew Kelly, Ardell Adams, Brandon Murphy, Brian Cantu, Brian Schneider, Byron Gettis, Cory Wilson, Craig Zurliene, Darius Green, Daryle Jones, Dennis Barnett, Deveon Moss, Dr. Chris Cunnings, Heath Bohannon, Jermaine Cooper, Joe Beimfohr, John Keeven, Justin Townsend, Keith Jackson, Kendall Beard, Kevin Lambert, Mark Albertini, Mark Williams, Mike Garavalia, Mike Harrison, Mike Siverly, Nick Gianino, Nick Hegger, Oku Satcher, Ricardo Harris, Rick Schilb, Ryan Presson, Scott Mehring, Stephen Webb, Steve Kirk, Tony Wheatley, Troy Cogdill, and Zach Carter.Â
His legacy continued on in 1997 with an NAIA postseason berth. One year later, the legacy was cemented with a 1998 induction into the Bearcat Hall of Fame.Â
Despite the induction, Poelker charged on, as he had plenty left in the tank. In 2002, Poelker's Bearcats made it all the way to the National Semifinals, a terrific run that earned Poelker the honor of NAIA National Coach of the Year.
Coach Poelker faced another challenge in the sunset years of his coaching career. From leading the restart of the program, he led McKendree into a transition to both NCAA Division-II membership and the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2012, a period in which a feared linebacker from Arlington Heights named Jason Rejfek roamed the field. 12 years later, that same linebacker would be handed the keys to the program his former coach once led.Â
"Coach Poelker had a profound effect on myself and every bearcat he coached in his years here. Words cannot describe the loss we are all feeling today but the stories from the last couple hours show the impact that CP left on all of us."Â
Leading into the 2026 McKendree Athletics Hall of Fame Ceremony, Poelker was unable to attend in person. However, in a powerfully emotional moment for those in attendance, he was able to appear over video to honor the induction of Justin Townsend ('00).Â
More details regarding a Celebration of Life and other ways to honor Coach Poelker's legacy will be made available as soon as we are able to do so.
