Lebanon, IL - The 23rd-ranked McKendree University Softball team brought in another Great Lakes Valley Conference honor on Monday when it was announced that senior pitcher
Sami Huck was named the league's Pitcher of the Week. It was perhaps to the surprise of few if any, but nevertheless, Huck starred with a historic stat line over her appearances for the week for her second career GLVC Pitcher of the Week honor.
The Bearcats had spent this past weekend over in Marion, IL at the Oasis Sports Complex for a three-day event, and it was her first outing there that Huck shined brightest. In a complete game shutout win over Wisconsin-Parkside, Huck nearly threw a perfect game. The Rangers were retired for 20 strikeouts, and outside of a hit by pitch, nobody else even reached base. There was a flyout, but beyond that, all K's for Huck. The outing set McKendree Softball's single-game strikeout reecord and also tied the NCAA Division-II seven-inning record.
Huck made one more start for the weekend, and it came against Ferris State. This go-around, Huck was locked in a low-scoring pitchers' duel, with it being a 1-0 Bearcat lead until the fifth. Huck would strike out three and allow just one earned run. Her weekend concluded with a 3-inning relief appearance against Purdue Northwest, where she struck out 3.
Total Stats for the Week: (2-0), 0.44 ERA, 16.0 innings, 4 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, 26 strikeouts (8 looking), 2 hit by pitches, .312 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched), 9 runners stranded, .078 batting average against
The Bearcats are in route to sunny Florida, where they will face Sioux Falls, Dominican, Clarion, Edinboro, California (PA), Ashland, and Southwest Minnesota State. All games are being streamed for a fee over at FloSoftball.
McKendree's first home game is Saturday, March 21st, as they'll host the Southwest Baptist Bearcats in GLVC play. Wedged in between the Florida trip and SBU twin bill are the road doubleheaders against Truman State and William Jewell to begin GLVC action.
