Findlay, OH - The McKendree University Women's Golf team was in action to start the week eastward at Findlay Country Club for the NCAA Division-II East Regional. The Bearcats were one of five GLVC teams that made it to the Regional stage, and all five of those teams placed within the team top eight. The Bearcats were in contention after the first round (T-3rd), but after dropping strokes in the second round, McKendree was then unable to fend off surging squads from UMSL and Ferris State, who both passed the Bearcats. McKendree would fall just short of the four-team cut to make it to the National Championsip, and despite missing the cut, still placed three scoring players inside of the Individual Top 25, led by
Chiara Bortolotti, who finished tied for 14th.
Reagan Martin stormed out to a -2 start through four holes, and was a key reason as to why McKendree was towards the top of the leaderboard come the end of round one. Bortolotti played +1 on the back nine and would finish the round with a +2/74. Martin (+5/77) and
Waritsara Rungrojanaluk (+7/79) both broke 80, with
Cale Albertina also getting a birdie on the par-3 12th for a 7-birdie round for the Bearcats.
Unfortunately for McKendree, blue numbers crept back into the scorecards in round two. Working through that, Bortolotti still kept it under 40 going out with a +1/37, and birdied once on the back nine as well for a +6/78. Rungrojanaluk was right behind her with a +7/79 and birdied the 17th, while Martin (10th) and Alba Camps (11th) also got red numbers on the back nine. However, UMSL and Ferris State combined for nine birdies on the back nine alone to shift the standings, leaving McKendree still above the cut line, but nonetheless right on it going into the final round of play.
The Bearcats would improve by nine team strokes in round three, with Camps, Martin, and Rungrojanaluk all within two strokes of each other. Camps birdied twice on the front nine, doing so on the 5th and 6th as part of her +1/37 on the front. Martin (2), Rungrojanaluk (1), and Bortolotti (1) all birdied as well to make up ground, but a nine-stroke improvement by Ferris State and the Bulldogs besting the Bearcats by 12 strokes was enough to make up that gap and push McKendree out of the fourth and final team qualification spot for the National Championship.
Bortolotti led the way with a +18 and was in a tie for 14th. Rungrojanaluk was just three strokes behind her at +21 and in a tie for 21st. Martin closely followed at +22 and a tie for 25th. Camps came in at +26 and a tie for 36th. Albertina was +36 and in a tie for 71st.
