(MAYFIELD, Ky., Nov. 16)- The McKendree University women's basketball team had four score in double figures on Tuesday night to earn a 72-66 win at Mid-Continent University.
The Bearcats improved to 2-4 overall and will host University of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday, November 20th at 7 p.m.
Senior guard
Katie Fullerton (Coulterville, Ill., Coulterville) led all players with 22 points, while sophomore forward
Shelby Woelfel (Jerseyville, Ill., Jerseyville) and freshman guard
Brittany Willis (St. Louis, Mo., Parkway South) each had 13 points. Sophomore guard
Leann Voss (Breese, Ill., Breese Central) also contributed 11 points for McKendree in the victory. Katelyn Perry matched Fullerton's 22 points to lead the Cougars.
McKendree trailed 9-7 in the early going, but back-to-back three pointer's by Fullerton and Voss jump-started an 8-0 run that put the Bearcats out front 15-9 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half. Mid-Continent made two free throws to get within 24-20 with under four minutes left in the half, but solid free throw shooting by McKendree in the final three minutes of the first half gave the Bearcats a 35-25 edge at the break.
McKendree led by as many as 18 in the second half, but a surge by the Cougars and a three-pointer by Lindsey Davis cut the Bearcat lead down to 70-64 with under three minutes to play. Two free throws by sophomore forward
Courtney Harris (St. Louis, Mo., St. Joseph Academy) gave McKendree an eight point lead with a minute to play and the Bearcats forced a turnover in the final stretch to seal the win.
McKendree shot just over 40-percent in the game and was 61.5-percent from beyond the arc, compared to the Cougars 20-percent from long distance.
