WARD CLOSES OUT COLLEGIATE CAREER WITH TWO GOALS IN 4-1 WIN AT WILLIAM WOODS, BEARCATS SET NEW SCHOOL RECORD WITH 17 WINS

Box Score (FULTON, Mo., October 29)- The McKendree University men's soccer team set a new school record on Saturday by defeating William Woods University 4-1 to win its 17th game this season.

The Bearcats closed ended their season with an overall record of 17-1. The previous record of 16 wins was achieved in 2006 (16-6-3) and the matched in 2007 (16-2-1).

McKendree found itself trailing in the ninth minute following a William Woods goal by Matt Steiniger and the Bearcats couldn't find the back of the net in the first half to trail at the break.

The Owls held onto its lead through the majority of the half until Ward tied the game, 1-1, in the 63rd minute unassisted. Senior defender Mitch Fear (Southampton. England/Tauntons) gave McKendree a 2-1 lead in the 67th minute off an assist by freshman forward Anthony Grant and Ward struck again in the 69th minute off a pass from Grant to push the Bearcats lead to 3-1. Sophomore forward Kavel Smith (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George’s College) scored the final goal of the contest in the 79th minute unassisted to extend the McKendree lead to 4-1 and the win in the 2011 finale.

Senior goalkeeper Joe Sagar (Oldham, England/Hulme) played all 90 minutes in goal and had two saves, while improving to 15-1 this season.
