Ashley Agee (Moberly, Mo./Moberly) scored 20 points to lead the McKendree University women's basketball team to a 84-74 win over Mid-Continent University.
The Bearcats will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., on February 25-26th to play in the Las Vegas Showdown. The Bearcats will play University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) on Friday at 6 p.m. (PST).
Agee led all players with 20 points, while freshman guard
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) poured in 17 second-half points. Sophomore guard
Brittany Willis (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) had 11 points and freshman guard
Danielle Amann-Stewart (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) scored 10 points to round out the Bearcats double-digit scoring.
After trailing 14-8 midway through the first half, McKendree went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-14 lead with 12:46 left in the half. The Bearcats led by as many as eight, 27-19, only for the Cougars to battle back and take a 31-30 lead with 4:15 remaining. McKendree held on over the final four minutes of the half and took a 37-35 lead into the half.
Everything clicked for the Bearcats offensively in the second half and a 15-of-27 shooting effort from the field in the second half helped McKendree to the win. A jumper by Willis with under 10 minutes to play in the contest gave the Bearcats their first double-digit lead, 61-51, only for the Cougars to pull within three, 70-67 with 3:22 to play.
McKendree took a 78-68 lead on a free throw by Ponce with 52 seconds to play and McKendree held on down the stretch for the win.
Stephanie Malone Mid-Continent with 19 points in the loss, while Chantiera Johnson and Breona Houston had 18 and 11 points.
