Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., Aug. 30)- The McKendree University men's soccer team kicked off the 2012-13 athletic schedule in style on Thursday night with a 4-1 win over Madonna University (Mich.).
The Bearcats improved to 1-0 overall and will host Davenport University (Mich.) on Monday, Sept. 3rd at 2 p.m. The victory was also Donny Sheehan's first as head coach of the men's soccer team at McKendree.
McKendree was fouled in the box in the 30th minute, and senior forward
Mike Williams (Headcorn, England/Norton Knatchbull) converted the penalty kick try to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.
In the 43rd minute, junior midfielder
Kavel Smith (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George’s College) scored off a pass from freshman forward
Alex Ridsdale (Nelson, New Zealand/Mount Albert) to put McKendree in front at the half, 2-0.
Ridsdale took advantage of a bobble by Crusader goalkeeper Adrian Motta and scored unassisted in the 48th minute to take a 3-0 lead, but Madonna countered and scored in the 64th minute to cut the Bearcats lead to 3-1.
Freshman midfielder
Eddie Wilding (Felixstowe, Sussex, England/Doncaster College) sealed the win with a goal in the 74th minute off Ridsdale's second assist of the match to put McKendree in front 4-1.
Freshman goalkeeper
Scott Armistead (Auckland, New Zealand/Saint Peter's College) started the match, while fellow freshman
Matt Derrington (St. Louis, Mo./Trinity Catholic) grabbed three saves while playing in goal in the second half. Armistead improved to 1-0 overall with the win.
