Box Score (EVANSVILLE, Ind., April 28)—The McKendree University baseball team dropped the final game of its four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series on Sunday at the University of Southern Indiana, 6-0.
A three-run second inning gave host Southern Indiana the lead for good as the Screaming Eagles were able to complete the weekend sweep of the Bearcats. McKendree slips to 18-22 overall and 13-19 in the GLVC East Division. The Bearcats will hit the road for the final time in the 2013 season on Wednesday when McKendree travels to the University of Missouri-St. Louis for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
Senior first baseman
Rob Beatty (Millstadt, IL/Belleville West) and sophomore infielder
Pierce Borah (Mt. Vernon, IL/Mt. Vernon) each collected two hits against Southern Indiana. As a team, McKendree collected seven hits against USI starter Matt Bowles, who went the distance for his third complete game of the season. Bowles walked two and struck out nine as he improved to 8-3 on the year.
Southern Indiana (29-15, 18-14 GLVC) registered five consecutive singles in the second inning that led to three runs for a 3-0 USI lead. The Screaming Eagles tacked on another run in the third inning before adding a pair of insurance tallies in the seventh inning.
McKendree put together a scoring threat in the sixth inning, loading the bases with two outs. After the first two batters were retired in the frame, sophomore infielder
Jake Kline (Carol Stream, IL/Glenbard North) singled up the middle and Beatty followed with a single to left field. Borah stepped up next and drew a walk to load the bases. Sophomore first baseman
Craig Dalman (Nashville, IL/Nashville) drove the first pitch he saw in the at-bat to deep left-center field, but USI center fielder Kyle Kempf tracked down the fly ball for the final out of the inning.
The Bearcats threatened again in the eighth inning as Beatty and Borah posted back-to-back singles, but Bowles worked out of the jam to preserve the shutout.
Freshman left-hander
Josh Tonozzi (Mark, IL/Putnam County) was charged with the loss on the mound for McKendree. Tonozzi scattered 10 hits and five earned runs over 6 2/3 innings of work. Tonozzi walked one and struck out two.
