McKendree put together its largest second-half rally in nearly nine years Monday night to claim its first GLVC victory of the season. The Bearcats tralied the University of Illinois Springfield by 16 points with 9:55 left in the second half before battling back to grab a 102-100 overtime win at the Statham Center.
Clinton Happe (Evansville, IN/F.J. Reitz), who became the 48th member of the Bearcats' 1,000-point club earlier in the period, drilled a 23-foot shot with 6.9 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 93-93 and force overtime. In the extra period, each team only made one field goal, bu the Bearcats were able to win the battle at the free throw line. McKendree made 7-of-8 attempts from the foul line in the final five minutes, compared to just 5-of-10 for the Prairie Stars.
Mike DiGregorio (Morton Grove, IL/Niles Notre Dame) poured in a career-high 30 points, including 17 in the first half, to lead the way for McKendree. Happe finished with 23 points and boosted his career total to 1,012 points.
Will Kirksey (St. Louis, MO/Lafayette) added 15 points while
Matt Holmes (Houston, TX/Marshall) contributed 14 points. Both Kirksey and Holmes pulled down a team-high eight rebounds against UIS.
Mike Springs (Waukegan, IL/Waukegan) dished out a season-high 10 assists and finished one shy of his career-high. The win boosted the Bearcats' overall record to 7-7 while they are now 1-5 in the GLVC.
The win marked McKendree's largest rally from a deficit of at least 15 points in the second half since March 5, 2005. On that date, the Bearcats trailed Columbia College by 17 points with just 4:18 to play before posting a 63-62 win in the semifinal round of the American Midwest Conference Tournament.
