(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 10)--After a tough five-set home loss to Missouri Baptist University on Wednesday, the McKendree University volleyball team will look to bounced back against a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference foes this weekend at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center. The Bearcats will take on the University of Southern Indiana Friday night at 7 p.m. before Bellarmine comes to town for a 3 p.m. match-up on Saturday. Both matches will be carried live on the Bearcat Sports Network, with the pre-game show beginning 15 minutes prior to first serve.

On Wednesday, McKendree won the first two sets before Missouri Baptist -- which is ranked No. 12 in the NAIA -- rallied to capture the final three sets and the match. The Bearcats lost by scores of 25-17, 25-22, 20-25, 26-28 and 15-13. The loss snapped a four-match win streak for McKendree. Now 9-7 overall on the season, the Bearcats will take a 6-3 GLVC record into the weekend. McKendree currently sits in third place in the GLVC East Division, two games behind Lewis University for the top spot and just one behind the University of Indianapolis for second. The Bearcats hold the tie-breaker on UIndy for the season thanks to a 3-2, come-from-behind victory last Friday evening in Indianapolis, Ind. Friday's match also begins the second half of the 2014 GLVC schedule for McKendree.

Heading into the weekend's play, McKendree ranks fifth in the GLVC in kills per set with an average of 13.61. The Bearcats sit just outside the top five in three other categories as they are sixth in hitting percentage (.206) and seventh in both assists (12.44 per set) and service aces (1.15 per set). Individually, sophomore middle hitter Sophie Fairman (Staunton, IL/Staunton) ranks fifth in the conference in attack percentage at .321. Freshman outside hitter Arela Williams (San Diego, CA/LaJolla Country Day) holds down eighth place in kills at 3.10 per set. In service aces, senior outside hitter Kelsey Johnson (Aviston, IL/Breese Central) ranks eighth in the GLVC at 0.29 per set, while Williams is right behind in ninth at 0.27 aces per set.

Friday's match against Southern Indiana will also mark the Bearcats' Dig Pink match for 2014. The McKendree volleyball program will honor cancer survivors and those who have fought the battle against the disease in a special ceremony following the second set. There will also be special fund-raisers and silent auctions being held throughout the night, which all funds raised going to the Side-Out Foundation.

Following this weekend's action, all 16 conference schools will head to Aurora, Ill., for next weekend's GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Challenge. Matches will be held Friday and Saturday, and will pit teams from the GLVC against schools from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. McKendree has fared well in each of its first two GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Challenge visits, posting a record of 2-1 during the three-match event each time.
