McKendree Volleyball Team Swept at Drury

Sophie Fairman had 11 kills to lead McKendree at Drury
Box Score (SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Oct. 26)—The McKendree University volleyball team team saw its three-match win streak come to an end Sunday afternoon as the Bearcats were swept in three sets by Drury University. The host Panthers took the best-of-five match by scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-20.

With the loss, McKendree slips to 14-10 overall and 8-5 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Bearcats will open their final home of the 2014 season on Tuesday when the University of Illinois Springfield comes to the Harry M. Statham Sports Center for a GLVC contest. First serve is set for 7 p.m.

Sophomore middle hitter Sophie Fairman (Staunton, IL/Staunton) connected for a team-high 11 kills to pace McKendree. Freshman outside hitter Arela Williams (San Diego, CA/LaJolla Country Day) helped out with eight attacks, while freshman middle hitter Maria Rasch (Kenosha, WI/Westosha Central) chipped in with six kills for the Bearcats. Senior Abby Hanger (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) anchored the back row with 17 digs, while sophomore setters Aubry Dickmann (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) and Breanna Howe (Mt. Pulaski, IL/Mt. Pulaski) each collected 15 assists in the match.

Drury (14-8, 5-8 GLVC) dominated the first set, hitting .444 as a team in building an early lead in the match. The Panthers then grabbed an early lead in the second set before McKendree chipped away at the deficit, and a kill by Rasch brought the Bearcats within 15-13. Drury rebounded to score five of the next six points to regain momentum and take a two-set lead into the intermission.

Another fast start gave Drury a 9-2 lead in the third set before McKendree fought back once again. The Bearcats used a 7-1 run to rally within 16-15. Sophomore outside hitter Bailey Kampwerth (Breese, IL/Mater Dei) came off the bench to provide a pair of kills during the spurt for McKendree.

The Panthers never lost the lead, however, and were able to pull away down the stretch to finish off the sweep of McKendree. Brooke Antenen led Drury with 11 kills, 23 assists and 21 digs in the contest.
