Box Score (JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., Nov. 8)—There were plenty of record-setting performances for the McKendree University football team in the Bearcats' 56-36 win Saturday afternoon at Lincoln University.
McKendree scored on all six of its first-half possessions in building a 37-14 halftime lead in cruising to its fourth consecutive victory. The Bearcats registered their first four-game win streak since 2010. McKendree improves to 4-6 overall and 4-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play and will close out the 2014 season with its final GLVC game of the year at Quincy University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
For the third time during the four-game win streak, McKendree topped the 500-yard mark in total offense. The Bearcats piled up 561 yards against the Blue Tigers. The 56 points scored by McKendree is also a season-high, surpassing the previous high of 53 set in the Bearcats' 53-43 win at Southwest Baptist University.
"Things really have been clicking on both sides of the ball and it's been fun to watch," said McKendree football coach
Mike Babcock. "Offensively we were able to pick up big chunks of yardage on the ground, and Fish connected with some of our receivers for big plays that helped us build a big lead in the first half. On the defensive side, we continued to limit the big play, especially early on, and we did a great job of containing (Lincoln running back Morris) Henderson for most of the contest."
]Junior quarterback
Isaac Fisher (Washington, IL/Washington) needed less than one half of football to set a new McKendree program record with five touchdown passes. Fisher needed just under 24 minutes to eclipse the previous record of four TD passes in a game, which was set by his older brother Austin in a 2010 game at Quincy. Fisher connected with four different receivers on his touchdown passes against Lincoln, including a pair to junior wide receiver
Cameron James (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville). Fisher closed the day by completing 14-of-21 pass attempts for 249 yards.
In addition to breaking the Bearcats' single-game record for passing touchdowns, Fisher also became the program's career leader in the category. Fisher now has 42 career TD passes, surpassing the previous record of 39 set by Austin Fisher.
A pair of McKendree defenders put their names by shattering single-season records during Saturday's victory. Sophomore linebacker
A.J. Wentland (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) posted a game-high 16 tackles and became the Bearcats' single-season tackles leader in the process. Wentland pushed his season total to 122 tackles, besting the old mark of 108 stops set by Brandon Nigro back in 2011. He also had 1 ½ tackles for loss and half a sack versus Lincoln.
Sophomore defensive lineman
Lucky Baar (Chicago, IL/Morgan Park) picked up a quarterback sack for the fourth straight game. Baar now has 14 sacks on the year, topping the previous record of 13 originally set by Oku Satcher in 1999 and matched by Satcher once again in 2001.
The Fisher-to-James combination struck for both of its touchdowns in the first quarter. McKendree took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards in nine plays and was capped when Fisher found James for a 24-yard TD pass for an early 7-0 lead. On its next possession, the Bearcats faced a fourth-and-two play in Lincoln territory. Fisher threw a quick out to senior wide receiver
Dewayne Gatti (Pasadena, CA/Bonita), who broke three different tackles on his way to a 30-yard scoring play. Sophomore kicker
Steven O'Block (Libertyville, IL/Carmel Catholic) tacked on the point after to give McKendree a 14-0 advantage midway through the first quarter.
Lincoln (2-8, 1-6 GLVC) scored on its next drive to cut the McKendree lead in half at 14-7. The Bearcats then needed just three plays and 56 seconds to regain a two-touchdown lead as Fisher hooked up with James on a 58-yard scoring strike with 1:19 left in the period. The pass play was the longest of the season for McKendree, which led 21-7 after one quarter of play.
In the early stages of the second quarter, Fisher tied the Bearcats' single-game record with his fourth TD of the contest when he found junior wide receiver
Pat Doty (Springfield, IL/Springfield) on a 21-yard touchdown toss and a 28-7 lead. Fisher then broke the record with 6:08 left until halftime, when freshman running back
Shayeen Edwards (East St. Louis, IL/Cahokia) made a diving catch in the end zone for a three-yard TD grab. The point after was blocked, giving the Bearcats a 34-7 cushion.
After the Blue Tigers scored with just over a minute left in the half to pull within 34-14, O'Block booted a 34-yard field goal on the final play of the half to give the Bearcats a 37-14 lead at the intermission.
O'Block tacked on field goals of 22 and 34 yards in the second half, while senior running back
Ryan Herring (Fairview Heights, IL/Belleville East) and sophomore running back
Kevin Witcik (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) posted scoring runs of two and eight yards, respectively, to account for the remaining points on the day for McKendree.
Edwards led the Bearcats' ground attack with 74 yards on eight carries, while Fisher finished with 73 yards on 10 rushes.
Baar, freshman linebacker
Austin Weltha (Bloomington, IL/Bloomington) and junior linebacker
George Hill (Chicago Heights, IL/Rich Central) all added six tackles each in the win for McKendree. Freshman defensive back
Weston Brown (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta Valley) notched the lone takeaway for the Bearcats with a third-quarter interception.
