Box Score 2 (QUINCY, Ill., April 8)—The McKendree University baseball team took one of two games in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Quincy University.
The Bearcats were involved in their third consecutive doubleheader split in Tuesday's twinbill. McKendree moves to 10-17 overall and will return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend at home against the University of Indianapolis. The Bearcats and Greyhounds will tangle in doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Hypes Field, with first pitch each day coming at noon.
Senior outfielder Steven Todoschuk (Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada/Saltfleet) had a productive afternoon at the plate for McKendree as he collected three hits and six RBI in the two games. Todoschuk staked the Bearcats to a 3-0 lead in the opener with a two-run home run in the first inning and an RBI single in the second inning. He then accounted for the Bearcats' offense in the nightcap with a three-run double.
Freshman left-hander Mitchell Langenhorst (Germantown, IL/Mater Dei) scattered five hits over four-plus innings in game one to collect the win. Langenhorst allowed one earned run and a walk with two strikeouts. Sophomore lefty Josh Tonozzi (Mark, IL/Putnam County) relieved Langenhorst in the fifth inning and held Quincy at bay to notch his first save of the 2014 season.
McKendree needed just two batters to take a 2-0 lead in the opener. Senior shortstop Tony Kossina (Millstadt, IL/Belleville West) led off with a double down the left-field line before Todoschuk stepped up and drilled an 0-1 pitch over the right-center field fence to stake the Bearcats to a two-run advantage. The homer was Todoschuk's team-leading third of the season.
In the second inning, freshman catcher Kyle Jackson (Hoffman, IL/Carlyle) reached on a one-out walk and moved to second thanks to a bunt single by freshman outfielder Jay Roberts (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield North). Two batters later, Todoschuk brought Jackson home with an RBI single to extend the Bearcats' lead to 3-0.
Quincy (12-17) tallied its lone run of the game in the third inning to pull within 3-1. McKendree then added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning to build a 5-1 lead. Junior third baseman Jake Kline (Carol Stream, IL/Glenbard North) opened the frame with a double, and freshman infielder Zach Klockowski (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) drew a walk. Junior outfielder Kyle Rutledge (Bloomington, IL/Normal) then reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Junior first baseman Jeff Tolliver (Salem, IL/Salem) plated the first run when he walked to force home Kline. Jackson stepped up next and produced an RBI groundout to score Klockowski with the final run of the contest.
In the nightcap, Quincy took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before breaking the game wide open with a seven-run outburst in the third inning to stretch its advantage to 8-0. The Hawks added a run in the fourth to make it 9-0 before McKendree struck for its only runs of the contest in the fifth inning. Tolliver opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Freshman catcher Nathan Micklautz (Louisville, IL/North Clay) walked and Kossina was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Todoschuk doubled to left field to clear the bases and bring the Bearcats within 9-3. Quincy closed the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sophomore right-hander Matt Sax (Chicago, IL/Jones Prep) was charged with the loss on the mound for McKendree. Sax allowed four hits and three earned runs over 2 1/3 innings with a pair of walks.
