Box Score 2 (LEBANON, Ill., March 23)- The McKendree University softball team racked up 26 hits on Monday in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Robert Morris University-Springfield.
The Bearcats improved to 10-14 overall and will host University of Southern Indiana on Saturday for a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at noon.
McKendree scored multiple runs in three of four innings in its five inning, 11-0 game one win. The Bearcats got on the board in the first inning when
Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest) stole home.
Ashley Scheffler (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) doubled and later scored on a single by Ponce, and a double by
Katie Nauman (Amboy, Ill./Amboy) brought in Ponce and
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) to make the score 4-0.
A two-run homer by
Kate Mayes (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville), her first of the season, in the second inning upped the score to 6-0, and McKendree added another four runs on six hits in the third inning to take a commanding 10-0 lead after three innings. A single by
Dani Schoenbacher (Tamaroa, Ill./Pinckeyville) in the fourth inning scored
Lohgan Bryant (Danville, Ill./Schlarman) from third for the Bearcat's 11th and final run of the game.
Pitcher
Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) improved to 5-1 overall and had two strikeouts in the win, while Scheffler had three hits, an RBI and a run scored in game one.
McKendree held a 6-0 lead after two innings in game two, but added five runs in the third inning on its way to an 11-0 five inning win again in game two.
Doggendorf scored the Bearcat's first run in game two, scoring on a groundout by Mayes, and Scheffler came in to score later in the inning on a sac fly by Johnson for an early 2-0 lead. A single by Doggendorf in the second inning scored
Morgan Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and Bryant to extend the lead to 4-0, and an RBI single by Scheffler and a ground out by Johnson that brought in a run made the McKendree lead 6-0.
The Bearcats blew the game open in the third inning with five runs to earn the eventual 11-0 win. A triple by Mayes scored three runs, and Scheffler and Johnson followed with RBI singles.
Pitcher
Brooke Gajewski (Kronenwetter, Wis./D.C. Everest) improved to 3-4 overall and had three strikeouts in the win, while Doggendorf, Mayes, and Scheffler each had two hits.
