INDIANAPOLIS SEASON STATISTICS
(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 20)--The McKendree University men's basketball team continues a busy week in Great Lakes Valley Conference road action the Bearcats head east for games at Saint Joseph's College and the University of Indianapolis. McKendree will meet Saint Joseph's on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Rensselaer, Ind., before closing out the week against Indianapolis Saturday at 3:15 p.m. ET. Both games can be heard live on the Bearcat Sports Network at www.mckbearcats.com/watch. Each contest will begin with a 10-minute pre-game show.
McKendree heads into the weekend with an overall record of 9-6. The Bearcats collected a big GLVC victory Monday night at the University of Illinois Springfield with an 86-84 decision in a game that featured 15 ties and 13 lead changes.
David Franklin (O'Fallon, IL/Althoff Catholic) and
Michael Jackson (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) each scored 21 points while
Darin Winkelman (Steeleville, IL/Steeleville) chipped in with 16 points and
Nate Michael (St. Joseph, IL/St. Joseph-Ogden) had 13 points in the effort for McKendree. It marked the Bearcats' first triumph over the Prairie Stars in nearly two seasons.
In addition, the win was No. 1,097 in the career of McKendree men's basketball coach
Harry Statham. Already the all-time wins leader in men's college basketball history, Statham pulled to within one victory of tying former University of Tennessee women's coach Pat Summitt for the all-time mark among college coaches -- men's or women's, all divisions -- at the four-year level. Thursday's game at Saint Joseph's will be the Bearcats' first attempt for Statham to tie the mark.
Franklin sits in fourth place in the GLVC in scoring at 18.7 points per game. He has also climbed to sixth in the league in rebounding at 7.7 boards per outing. Thanks to a solid 11-for-13 effort from the charity stripe at UIS, Michael moved up to eighth place in the conference in free throw percentage at .875. Over his last three games, Michael is 26-of-29 (.897) from the foul line.
ABOUT SAINT JOSEPH'SThe Pumas bring an 8-9 season record and a 3-4 GLVC ledger into Thursday's game at the Scharf Alumni Fieldhouse. Saint Joseph's and Indianapolis tangled in conference play Monday evening in Rensselaer, with the visiting Greyhounds holding off an upset bid from the Pumas, 84-81. C.J. Hardaway and Jordan Seele each came off the bench to score a team-best 15 points in the game, while Davious Webster helped out with 11 points.
Nathan Tidwell, who was limited to seven points by UIndy, leads a balanced attack for Saint Joseph's at 11.5 points per contest. Tidwell is also the Pumas' top rebounder at 8.7 boards per game, a figure that ranks third in the GLVC. Nick Jeffirs averages 11.2 PPG, while Hardaway is next at 10.8 PPG. Seele leads all GLVC players in field goal percentage, knocking down 64.6 percent of his attempts from the floor.
Saint Joseph's holds a 3-1 edge in the series since McKendree joined the GLVC prior to the 2012-13 season. The Bearcats' lone victory over the Pumas came back on Jan. 23, 2014 in a 102-91 decision at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center in Lebanon. Last season, Saint Joseph's pulled away late for a 70-63 win in Rensselaer, Ind., on Jan. 24, 2015.
Logan Carson (DuQuoin, IL/DuQuoin) paced McKendree with 14 points, while
Michael Jackson (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) and
John Murphy (Peoria, IL/Richwoods) each connected for 11 points in the contest.
ABOUT INDIANAPOLISThe Greyhounds slipped out of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) top 25 poll earlier this week after holding down the No. 20 spot a week earlier. Indianapolis is 12-3 overall and 6-1 in GLVC play. The Greyhounds have won 11 of their last 12 games, with the lone loss coming in a 77-65 setback at Drury University last Thursday.
UIndy boasts one of the top players in the conference in Jordan Loyd, who is averaging 19.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Loyd is second in the conference in scoring and 10th in rebounding. He is also shooting 87.4 percent from the free throw line and ranks among team leaders with 40 assists and 20 steals. Eric Davidson (11.3 PPG) and Joe Retic (10.3 PPG) also average in double figures in the scoring column for the Greyhounds.
McKendree is in search of its first victory over Indianapolis since becoming GLVC members. The Greyhounds have taken all four previous match-ups with the Bearcats, including last year's 87-56 win in Indianapolis on Jan. 22, 2015. Jackson netted 21 points and grabbed six rebounds to show the way for the Bearcats.
Logan Carson (DuQuoin, IL/DuQuoin) had 16 points as
Matt Holmes (Houston, TX/Marshall) connected for 13 points.
The games in Indiana will close out a three-game road swing for McKendree. Following the UIndy contest, McKendree will play seven of its final nine games in the friendly confines of the Statham Center. The Bearcats will begin that stretch by hosting the University of Wisconsin-Parkside next Thursday (Jan. 28) before taking on Lewis University a week from Saturday (Jan. 30).
