(ROMEOVILLE, Ill., Oct 15) – The McKendree University D3 men's hockey team has won for the second time in a row by defeating Lewis University 5-3. The Bearcats improve to 2-4 overall and will return to the ice October 21 and 22 against Missouri State University, currently 9-0 overall, at Mediacom Ice Park in Springfield, MO.
The game started off all for the Bearcats. Senior forward
Brett Maggio (Collinsville, IL/O'Fallon) started off the match by finding the back of the net on a power play as well as in the second period. Freshman forward
Cole Fluchel (Wildwood, MO/Eureka HS) was credited with the assist in the first while freshman forward
Matt Adams (Amisk, AB, Canada/Hughenden Public School) and freshman defenseman
Kyle Gawlik (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central HS) tallied assists from Maggio's second goal. Freshman forward
Brendan Kelly (Arnold, MO/Lutheran South HS) added to the first period with an assist from senior forward
Joseph Dumoulin (Granite City, IL/Marquette Catholic).
Lewis answered back early in the second period with one goal but were unable to contain the Bearcats power as freshman forward Trevor Reick scored shorthanded from Kelly. A final goal from Fluchel with assist from junior forward
Garrett Kellam (St. Joseph, MO/Central) in the final seven minutes of the game sealed the deal for the Bearcats.
Goaltending was a success with 36 shots on goal and only three goals allowed by sophomore
Zachary Allen (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny).
