(ROMEOVILLE, Ill., Oct. 15) – The McKendree University men's D3 hockey team took home a 7-2 win against Lewis University on Friday night at the Canlan Ice Sports Arena in Romeoville, Ill.
The Bearcats opened the scoring in the first period and never looked back. Freshman forward
Matt Adams (Amisk, AB, Canada/Hughenden Public School) got the first goal for McKendree unassisted. Junior defenseman Josh Donovan scored his first of the game on a pass from
Zach Loehr (Glen Carbon, IL/Edwardsville HS) with 6:24 left in the first period. Junior forward
Garrett Kellam (St. Joseph, MO/Central) scored a buzzer beater to close out the period on a pass from senior forward
Brett Maggio (Collinsville, IL/O'Fallon).
Lewis University opened the scoring in the second period with 2:12 left. McKendree responded with under a minute left on a goal from
Zachary Allen (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny) assisted by
Brendan Kelly (Arnold, MO/Lutheran South HS).
Lewis opened the scoring in the third period as well, but that would close out the scoring for the home team. Donovan found the back of the net again halfway through the third period on a pass from
Colten Wilson (Imperial, MO/Fox HS). Maggio scored his first of the game with 4:17 left in the third period with the assist coming from Adams. To close out the scoring, Maggio notched his second goal of the game on a pass from Kellam.
Goaltender
Trevor Klostermann (Highland, IL/Highland HS) turned away 35 of 37 shots in the game for a save percentage of 0.946.
The Bearcats earned their first win of the season by a final score of 7-2. The team plays again on Saturday at 5:10 p.m. at the Canlan Ice Sports Arena in Romeoville, Ill.
