(WEST DUNDEE, Ill., Nov. 20) – The McKendree University D3 men's hockey team shutout Northern Illinois University 6-0 on Saturday night in West Dundee, Ill.
The Bearcats opened the scoring in the first period with junior defenseman
Nick Brendel (Fenton, MO/Fox) finding the back of the net with assists coming from freshman forward
Cole Fluchel (Wildwood, MO/Eureka HS) and junior forward
Garrett Kellam (St. Joseph, MO/Central). McKendree found the back of the net again in the first period on a goal by Kellam with Fluchel notching an assist. In the final game of his career senior
Joseph Dumoulin (Granite City, IL/Marquette Catholic) scored his first of the season on a pass from freshman forward
Matt Adams (Amisk, AB, Canada/Hughenden Public School) to close out the first period ahead 3-0. Brendel scored his second of the game in the second period with assists coming from senior defenseman
Aaron Rogers (Troy, IL/Triad HS) and Fluchel. Freshman forward Stanislav Gavrus found the back of the net on an unassisted effort to close out second period scoring. Gavrus scored the only goal of the third period with just 2:26 left to play. Registering an assist on the Gavrus goal was freshman forward Michael Weedman. At the final buzzer the Bearcats held a 6-0 lead, which was good enough for a McKendree victory.
McKendree earned its third win of the season in the contest after falling in a shootout on Friday night.
Both Brendel and Gavrus found the back of the net twice each. Fluchel registered assists on three of the Bearcats goals in the game. Dumoulin scored his first goal of the season in the contest, which was the last game of his career at McKendree. Sophomore goaltender Zach Allen stopped all 20 of the Huskies shots to earn his first shutout of the season.
The Bearcats are done for the semester, however, January 13 the team has its home opener at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex against the University of Arkansas.
