(OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla., March 26)- The McKendree University women's wrestling team had six individuals place in the top six this weekend at ASICS University Nationals.
The Bearcats will return to the mat next weekend at the Last Chance Qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Trials in Iowa CIty, Iowa.
Junior
Lindsey Spjut (Montgomery, Texas/The Woodlands) and
Olivia Seppinni (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin), and sophomore
Megan Black (Batavia, Iowa/Eddyville-Balcksburg-Fremont) were McKendree's top finishers with third place finishes in their respective weight classes. Spjut posted a record of 4-1 at 53kg, including two pins and a tech fall. Her lone loss came to runner-up Amy Fearnside of Titan Mercury in the semifinals.
Seppinni won six straight matches after losing her opening match at 63kg to eventual champion Mallory Velte. Three of her wins came via tech fall.
Black lost her championship semifinal match at 58kg against runner-up Becka Leathers, but bounced back with two wins to finish in third place.
Senior
Hailee Lilly (Sanford, N.C./Lee County) and sophomore
Alexis Porter (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa High School) both finished in fourth place at the event. Lilly lost her opening match to Jathiya Isaac, but won four-straight matches to reach the third place match. Lilly lost a decision to Shelby Morrison to finish in fourth.
Porter lost an 11-3 decision to runner-up Shai Mason in the semifinals at 63kg, but defeated Rachel McFarland in the consolation semifinals by tech fall 10-0. Porter forfeited the third place match to Seppinni.
Sophomore
Brandy Lowe (Paxico, Kan./Saint Mary's) finished in sixth place at 75kg. Lowe lost a 10-2 decision to Victoria Francis in the semifinals, before losing a 10-0 tech fall to Niauni Hill in the consolation semifinals. Lowe lost the fifth place match by injury default.
Also competing for McKendree at the event were juniors
Tayler Resuriz (League City, Texas/Clear Falls) and Gabby Wehyrich, sophomores
Cassy Herkelman (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) and
Jasmine Bailey (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West), and freshman
Alexia Ward (Portland, Ore./Westview).
