(LEBANON, Ill., May 6)--The McKendree University baseball team will close out its 2016 season by heading north for a four-game series at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The Bearcats and Rangers will meet in doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday, with first pitch set for noon each day at Oberbruner Field.
McKendree wrapped up its home schedule Wednesday afternoon with an 11-3 loss to the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Bearcats will bring a 14-31 overall record and a 6-18 Great Lakes Valley Conference mark into its series at Wisconsin-Parkside. In its final conference series at Hypes Field in 2016, McKendree was defeated in three of four games by Lewis University, with each game last Saturday decided by one run. McKendree pushed its season batting average to .276 ahead of this weekend's games, and its 26 home runs through 45 games are the most for the program since the Bearcats smacked 27 round-trippers in 2012.
Grant Anderson (Mackinaw, IL/Deer Creek-Mackinaw), who was injured and missed the final GLVC home series of the year last weekend versus, still leads McKendree with nine home runs, while
Keith Rogers (Marshall, IL/Marshall) belted a pair against the Flyers and now stands at seven homers. Andreson has a team-best 25 runs batted in, and Rogers has pulled within one of the team lead at 24. Rogers also ranks among GLVC leaders with a .361 average.
Right-hander
Nick Yung (Smithton, IL/Freeburg) collected his team-leading fourth victory of the 2016 season last Friday in a 1-0 win over Lewis. Yung tossed a four-hit shutout in the contest, striking out eight batters in the process.
Ryan Cates (Anderson, IN/Yorktown) and
Matt Henning (Wichita, KS/Bishop Carroll) are next with three wins on the mound for the Bearcats, while Henning has posted four saves.
Josh Tonozzi (Mark, IL/Putnam County) made his team-leading 17th appearance on the mound in the final game of his career at Hypes Field against UMSL. Tonozzi has pitched in 66 games during his four seasons at McKendree.
Behind the plate,
Chris Deaville (Rantoul, IL/Rantoul) (pictured) has caught 34 of the Bearcats' 45 games heading into the final weekend of the season. Deaville has thrown out just over 39 percent of would-be base stealers against the Bearcats, throwing out 18 runners in 46 attempts.
ABOUT WISCONSIN-PARKSIDE
The Rangers are 9-30 overall and 4-18 in GLVC play. UW-Parkside has played just seven games at home this season, winning three of those contests. UW-Parkside ranks last in the GLVC in both batting average (.255) and earned-run average (7.24). Weather and field conditions hampered the Rangers' last GLVC series at home against Bellarmine University. The teams were originally slated to play a four-game set in Louisville, but was moved to Wisconsin late last week. Then, rain and wet field conditions pushed the teams into Monday, where they split a twinbill on Kenosha's Augie Schmidt Field. UW-Parkside was last in action on Wednesday in a 12-2 road loss against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Kyohei Matika is one of four UW-Parkside players hitting above the .300 mark. Matika leads the Rangers at .346 overall while he has scored a team-best 25 runs. Zach Thompson checks in at .312 and leads the program with 15 stolen bases in 16 attempts and 19 RBI.
On the mount, Tyler Jandron has won nearly half of the Rangers' nine contests. Jandron is 4-3 with a team-low 2.21 ERA among starting pitchers. He ranks sixth in the GLVC in earned-run average and leads all conference hurlers with 70 strikeouts in 57 innings of work. Jandron also has four complete games and a pair of shutouts to his credit.
Last season, the Bearcats and Rangers split a four-game series at Hypes Field. McKendree rolled to wins of 13-3 and 8-1 in the first two contests, while UW-Parkside battled back to take the final two games, 10-9 and 13-6. The last time McKendree played on the UW-Parkside campus in 2014, the Bearcats took three of four games.
