(SOMERS, Wis., May 8)—The McKendree University baseball team wrapped up its 2016 season Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader split on the road against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The Bearcats rolled to a 10-1 victory in the opener before the host Rangers bounced back to close the year with a 6-2 win in the nightcap.
McKendree finishes its season with an overall record of 15-34. The Bearcats went 7-21 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Senior left-hander
Josh Tonozzi (Mark, IL/Putnam County) (pictured) capped his McKendree career by tossing a complete-game four-hitter in winning game one. Tonozzi walked just one batter and struck out six, including the final two he faced to complete the shutout victory. It was the second complete game of the year for the southpaw, who also pitched in his 67
th game in a McKendree uniform. Tonozzi needed 105 pitches in Sunday's effort.
Freshman infielder
Luke Johnson (Barrington, IL/Barrington) remained hot at the plate for the Bearcats on Sunday, collecting five hits, including a 3-for-5 effort in the game one triumph. Junior first baseman
Keith Rogers (Marshall, IL/Marshall) and junior outfielder
Grant Anderson (Mackinaw, IL/Deer Creek-Mackinaw) each posted three hits for the second consecutive day, while senior catcher/outfielder
Connor Davault (Farmington, MO/Farmington) and junior catcher
Chris Deaville (Rantoul, IL/Rantoul) also posted three hits apiece for McKendree.
Johnson led off game one with a single and came around to score on an RBI single by Rogers to give McKendree a quick 1-0 lead. The Bearcats then used run-scoring doubles from senior infielder
Adam Kunkel (Red Bud, IL/Red Bud) and Davault to push the margin to 3-0 after three innings of play. A two-run double off the bat of Deaville in the fourth inning gave McKendree a 5-0 cushion before Johnson laced an RBI single in the top of the sixth to grab a 6-0 advantage.
Wisconsin-Parkside (12-31, 7-19 GLVC) scored its only run of the opener in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull within 6-1. McKendree then sealed the win by plating four runs in the seventh inning. Davault and Anderson each provided run-scoring hits in the frame for the Bearcats.
In the nightcap, the teams traded single runs in the second and fourth innings. Davault led off the top of the second with a double down the left-field line, and Rogers followed with an RBI double to push the Bearcats in front. After the Rangers answered with a run in the bottom of the second, McKendree took its final lead of the season in the top of the fourth. With one out, Rogers was hit by a pitch. He moved to second when Anderson reached on an error and reached third thanks to a single by junior outfielder
Ryan Cates (Anderson, IN/Yorktown). Rogers then raced home on a wild pitch to push the Bearcats in front at 2-1.
UW-Parkside knotted the contest with a run in the bottom of the fourth, then took the lead for good with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior left-hander
Sam Lidisky (Swansea, IL/Althoff Catholic) was charged with the loss in his final start at McKendree. Lidisky allowed six runs on 12 hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. He did not walk a batter and fanned four.
