(EAST ALTON, Ill., Oct. 21) – The McKendree University men's D3 hockey team completed the sweep of Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville with a victory Saturday night by a final score of 10-1.
The Bearcats improve to 5-1 on the season with the win. McKendree opened the scoring with a power-play goal from sophomore forward
Michael Weedman (O'Fallon, MO/St. Peters Spirit). Freshman forward
Derek Northrop (St. Louis, MO/De Smet Jesuit High School) found the back of the net to extend the Bearcats lead to two with 14 minutes to play in the first period. The Bearcats netted one more goal in the first period, on a shot from the slot by senior defenseman
Ethan Gremminger (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North). At the end of the first period McKendree held a 3-0 lead.
McKendree continued to display its offensive prowess in the second period as freshman forward
Nick Nelson (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell) scored his first on a hard shot that beat the Cougars goaltender. Later in the period the Bearcats added two goals in just 15 seconds. The first came from a well placed shot by Weedman, and the second came from senior defenseman
Nick Brendel (Fenton, MO/Fox). The second period came to a close with McKendree ahead 6-0.
The Bearcats kept firing on all cylinders in the third period as well. Nelson found himself on a breakaway and lit the lamp for his second of the game, to give McKendree the seven goal lead. Nelson completed the hattrick in the third period to put the Bearcats up 8-0. Sophomore defenseman
Nick Gay (Pinedale, WY/Tri City Outlaws) scored his first goal of the season to extend the McKendree lead to nine. The Cougars were able to find the back of the net, but the Bearcats still weren't done. Freshman forward
Dalton Wolfe (Pekin, IL/Pekin Community High School) netted his first career goal for McKendree to put the Bearcats up 10-1.
McKendree hits the ice again on November 3rd and 4th at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex for a two game series against Bradley University.
