(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 6) – The McKendree University men's D3 hockey team earned a 6-3 victory over Washington University-St. Louis on Friday night.
The Bearcats move to 3-0 with Friday's win. McKendree opened the scoring in the contest on a goal by freshman forward
Adam Dempski (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell North HS), assisted by freshman forward
Zack Miceli (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard West High School). The Bears had an answer, scoring on the power-play five minutes later. McKendree closed out the first period scoring with a power-play tally by freshman defenseman
Jacob Scrum (Maryville, IL/Collinsville High School) from the top of the point. Sophomore forward
Michael Weedman (O'Fallon, MO/St. Peters Spirit) and freshman forward
Derek Northrop (St. Louis, MO/De Smet Jesuit High School) assisted on the goal.
The two teams traded goals in the second period, with graduate student forward
Brett Maggio (Collinsville, IL/O'Fallon) finding the back of the net with 6:33 to play in the period. Northrop and Weedman added their second assists of the game on Maggio's goal. At the close of the second McKendree held a 3-2 lead.
The Bearcats scored twice in the third period before Washington University responded. Just five minutes into the period freshman forward
Garrett Poole (Columbia, IL/Columbia High School) fired a shot that beat the Bears net minder, with freshman defenseman
Riley Brown (Granite City, IL/Granite City High School) and Dempski adding assists. Freshman forward
Christian Blandina (Glen Carbon, IL/Edwardsville High School) scored next for McKendree, with senior defenseman
Ethan Gremminger (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) and Brown recording assists. The Bears had a response with just eight minutes left to play, but that wouldn't be enough. Dempski added his second marker of the game just 25 seconds later with freshman forward
Tony Grasso (O'Fallon, MO/De Smet Jesuit High School) notching an assist. The Bearcats took their third straight victory on home ice, winning 6-3 in the matchup.
Junior goaltender Zach Allen started in net for the Bearcats, stopping 22 of 25 shots for a save percentage of 0.880. Dempski led the scoring charge for McKendree in the game netting two goals and adding one assist in the game.
McKendree is back in action on Saturday at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex against Washington University - St. Louis at 4:45 p.m.
