(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 7) – The McKendree University men's D3 hockey team fell 4-3 to Washington University – St. Louis on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears struck first in the game, but the Bearcats responded with a goal from freshman forward
Zack Miceli (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard West High School) with freshman forward
Christian Blandina (Glen Carbon, IL/Edwardsville High School) notching an assist. The first period closed out with the teams locked at one a side.
Washington University scored first again in the second period with 16:22 left to play. Graduate student forward, and team captain
Brett Maggio (Collinsville, IL/O'Fallon) evened the score at 2-2 with 7:38 remaining in the second period. Sophomore forward
Michael Weedman (O'Fallon, MO/St. Peters Spirit) and freshman forward
Derek Northrop (St. Louis, MO/De Smet Jesuit High School) each registered assists on Maggio's goal. At the end of the second period the teams were still tied 2-2.
The Bears were able to find the back of the net just over one minute into the third period to regain a one goal lead. However, Northrop had an answer lighting the lamp on a pass from Maggio. Washington University was able to take the 4-3 lead, and eventual victory with just 3:18 left in regulation.
Junior goaltender Zach Allen backstopped the Bearcats, turning away 26 of 30 shots on goal. Northrop and Maggio each recorded a goal and an assist in the contest, with three other players registering one point in the game.
The Bearcats are back on the ice for two games at home against Western Illinois University on Friday, October 13 at 7:45 p.m. and Saturday, October 14 at 4:45 p.m.
