(LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 4) – The McKendree University D3 men's hockey team split the series with Washington University after falling 3-1 on Saturday night. The Bearcats fell to 4-12 overall and wrapped up their season.
Tonight McKendree honored six seniors for their many accomplishments over their years wearing purple and white. This will be the final regular season game for seniors
Aaron Rogers (Troy, IL/Triad HS),
Zach Loehr (Glen Carbon, IL/Edwardsville HS), Chris Stier, Dakota Brewer, Jack Dumoulin, and
Brett Maggio (Collinsville, IL/O'Fallon). Maggio announced he will be returning for his fifth year while he pursues his Master's in Business Administration.
The first period was dominated by the Bearcats as they controlled the puck for most of the 20 minutes.
Ethan Gremminger (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) scored a short-handed goal on an unassisted effort to break the scoreless tie near the ten-minute mark of the period. The Bears answered shortly after to tie the game back up at one to close out the first period.
During the second period the teams were held scoreless with the Bearcat's special teams effectively killing off several penalties. Stier kicked away all six shots on goal that the Bears threw his way throughout the period to keep the Bearcats in the game.
The Bearcats controlled most of the game with twice as many shots on goal than the Bears, for a total of 44. The Bears, however, made the most of their opportunities scoring twice in the third period to take home a 3-1 victory. Stier had a save percentage of .863 saving 19 of 22 shots on goal.
